Could I Euthanase With Alcohol?

I think kadz is putting you on.... :fun: It's a game of "Gotcha!" I can stand to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Now looking at your smiley Jollysue, you seem to be floating belly up!... now where did I put that brandy? ;)

Oops, I meant clove oil of course!

lol - I think cadz was being serious though. One of my friends always says - flush it away !!!

I think alot of the time its more about what you can stand to do as a 'human' ( I use that term losely for some people here). I couldnt put it in ice / oil / alchohol, the thought of them suffering more than they already have doesnt agree with me. I prefer to end it instantly, out the water, then smack on the head or chop the head off.

Either way its not nice

I have found this topic really interesting. I was always told by my lfs and fellow fish keepers just to flush it away or hit it with a rock or something and as i could not even dream of hitting it with a rock, i have always flushed them away. I really didnt understand that this was wrong but I understand now and am on my way now to read the sticky on this subject.

I suppose people just act on the advise they are given, thats why its good that we have these forums, for people to learn. I certainly wont be flushing anymore, I will use clove oil (the vodka/Brandy is too precious :) )

i would agree with your jist there jhf18. but finding out about things is the basis of fish keeping, doing what one person tells you, would seem to indicated a lack of personal initative. and aslo perhaps a lack if dedication to your stock.

firstly Boboboy your little insect that crawls over my screen is really annoying :) (where can i get one?)

And secondly I understand what you are saying but when you are new to the hobby there is a lot of information that needs to be taken in, you will probably say that I should have researched in detail before taking up the hobby but I didnt and I am learning each and everyday. The advise that I got was from my lfs and I saw no reason to disbelieve them, I mean why would you they are fish specialists (or supposed to be). Its only as I have been reading through these forums that i have found the advise that I got from my lfs on several matters was incorrect. So yes in future I will research before taking action. As for me caring for my fish, I wouldnt spend so long on here trying to find out more information and the best ways to do things if I didnt care for them.

As i have said many times before, this is a learning curve for all of us and at least your not 'flushing' anymore!LOL! You took the adult approach and researched into it. I know what you mean about the lfs, why wouldnt a newbie believe them, i know i did and then i found these forums and it opened my eyes to it, most, not all(before people start ranting at me!!!) lfs's are interested in 1 thing, the money. They have a basic knowledge of fishkeeping. I learnt more from this forum than any lfs. Saying that, i have one lfs near me that are fantastic and full of very good advice, so thy arent all bad. Its like information overload at first isnt it! GRJ :hyper:

Haha, some of these arnt very 'adultish' responses people  ...In all fairness, I understand everyone's fondness for there fish but lets be real. A fish generally isnt the most interlectual of beings, to ponder over the morals involved in putting one down is a little pointless. You may not like the reality but if the fish is going to die, just finish it :) im sure there is very limited 'stress' in smashing it etc. Whatever people like to do just do it, makes little difference, either way a suffering creature will be happier.

You would hardly take a fish to the vets to put to sleep would you!
A friend of mine recently took her large oscar to the vet and it was given a shot. I'd never heard of that being done before then.

LOL I tried to smash it the first time I saw it!!

Yeh i see your point, that we should be real, but some of us quite like to debate over such pointless issues like how to euthanise fish, it kinda makes the day go a little quicker

My vote's Clove Oil or Heavy Blow Method, not plain alcohol

By plain alcohol do you mean grain alcohol or wood alcohol? I would certainly vote no on wood alcohol, but I don't see the problem with grain alcohol, having used it. It seem less drama than the smash method--for me that is with my bad aim.
