Hi there....

I am thinking about giving my Tetra's to the pet shop and having only Cory's.....all different kinds what do you think? I just love them...and the tetra's just seem to bully them and steal their food? Any advice? :)

Not a bad idea. Recently, ive fallen in love with cories too. I just want to have every one of them lol. What size tank do you want?

I have just fallen in love with corys also!

Some good beginner ones that i have heard of: Corydoras Aeneus (Bronze Corydoras) Corydoras Paleatus (Peppered Corydoras)

Here's a website that will give you a lot of info on corys Planet Catfish

I have a 30 gallon with just cories in and I have just added 10 small neons, they only problem with a tank containing only cories is it can look a little empty at times, but now with just the neons it looks good.

I took over a 70 litre tank....which is about 16 gallons I think....so not as big as some of the others ;)
I currently have two Sterbas, one Panda and two Swartz Cory's as well as three Pristella Tetra. I have since added some plants and some ornaments for them to hide in. :)

I was told Cory's are prone to most infections and difficult to keep is this true?? I would be heart broken if they died :(

Thanks Captain...looks like an excellent website :)

with easy maintenence corys wont die on you. All you need to do is one 30% water change a week with a good diet, and good water chemistry (that goes for all fish) and they'll be just fine. Corys are somewhat hardy IMO. I had columnaris in my tank a month or 2 ago and every fish came down with it except them. They fought it off and never got it. The thing you need to be aware of is bacterial infections which come from poor care (less frequent water changes).

I have been trying my best, but it is difficult being a newby especially being thrown in the deep end with taking over somebody else's tank but seeing the little ones swim around makes it all worth it...I just wish they were healthier.....do you think that the tank could just use a really good clean?? As according to the previous owner he only cleaned and did water changes every month whereas I have been doing them twice a week as requested??

One of my little Cory's has not been himself for a while and has both good and bed days...but seems to be holding on....I suspect this could be due to some sort of bacterial infection.....any advice.....do you think I should treat the whole tank to be safe??

keep an eye on the fish. once a week water change is better, but you could get away with twice a week.

the reason why the cories arent that active is because they need bigger groups.

Good Luck

Id give it a nice 50% water change, then continue your 2 water changes a week. That seems great on your part to do those frequent water changes, keep it up, and in time they will be healthy and love you. They may also spawn too if conditions are good.

Sounds great :D
Is 50% not too much at one time...I did that once as I had high Nitrate levels and got into trouble by the pet shop owner ;)

I know....that's why I am thinking of giving away the tetra as I would like more but don't want to overstock the tank :) How many do you think I could have in a 16 gallon tank??

ohh, he said twice a week, i thought he said once every 2 weeks

He, he :)

Love your tiger!! :D

50% is top amount. I do it in 2 changes. Like i take 25%, refill, then take out 25% again and refill.

For a 15 gallon, i think you could have 6 or 7 corys tops.

I would love to have a cory only tank as well but just think tere wouldn't be as much interest in the upper regions of tak.

That said, I am still having 3 schools of them, along with 3 or 4 plecs and a couple of hoplo cats in my Rio!!!

Don't you just love them cats!!! :hey:  :hey:

Thanks!

You could get 6 of a species of corydoras (possible more, but im not sure how much) I dont recommend Panda Corys because they are sensitive, and just not a good beginner cory. basically all cories are the same though, take good care of them and they will be your favorite fish.

They do need to be in shoals though, 4 or more, preferably 6 or more
