hey im pretty new to all this and now realise that my 120 litre tank that has been running just over 4 weeksis overstocked. so far have lost 2 neons and 1 black molly (bad case of pop eye) on sunday bought 5 corydoras sterbai yesterday noticed 1 had turned very pale and today found it dead. looks like i might lose another one though, since putting in tank they swim constantly up and down and across the glass they hardly stop and seems quite frantic. i have also just noticed a few white spots on one of my panda garras does anyone know if i should just treat as whitespot. please please help

Hi,

Did you cycle the tank before adding any fish?

Have a read here http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/113861-fishless-cycling/

only for a few days i have also just added an external filter but have my internal one still in place which i will leave for 8 weeks. i should have mentioned that i have 9 neons, 2 black molly, 2 panda garra, 2 clown loach, 5 false flying fox, 1 rtbs, and now 4 corydoras. i now know that i am overstocked but is there anything i can do for my fish?

yeah, you are in deep trouble my friend, should have cycled your tank for at least 3 weeks. good luck. i would give you advice but that just common knowlege, and NEVER overstock

the tank takes longer than that to cycle if you have started from scratch...I would re-home the fish or return them and start a fishless cycle, it would be cruel to continue with a fish in cycle..

Can you post your water stats?

unfortunately my local aquarium kept would test my water and encourage me that it is ok to add more fish. thanks for your advice anyway but do you think i should treat for whitespot

Maybe you could get some mature filter media from someone nearby. Where are you located? Maybe someone on forum is nearby you. You might also try asking your LFS.

yes treat for white spot and do many water changes and hope for the best

This is kind of an emergency situation. Don't know what time it is where you are, but acting today would be better.

i hope not it is £21.95 a bottle Denitrol aquarium starter, nearly empty so got nutrafin (prevents fish loss) biological aquarium supplement. im from harlow in essex but have thought of someone who could hopefully do me a filter squeeze in morning. would it be best to add whitespot treatment now or wait till morning

not sure on the white spot treatment as ive never had to use it, but i would say follow the directions on the bottle and you should be fine. How much a bottle? im afraid to say it has been money wasted.

Doing a fish-in cycle is very hard work and it takes alot longer than a fishless cycle to actually cycle the filter. ...therefore you still have an uncycled filter despite all the magic bacteria in a bottle they flog you in the LFS (Local Fish Shop) that they sold you. They are useless the only thing that will cycle your filter is ammonia (which now is your fish).

Your Ammonia and Nitrite levels need to be 0...ANYTHING above 0 will be slowly killing your fish. Up your water changes to 50%, then test, if still above 0, do another 50% etc..untill they get to 0. Fish-in cycles need waterchanges 1,2 sometimes 3 times a day!, you are now a water changing machine.

I'd just like to point out that a 'filter squeeze' won't do you much good; the bacteria cling on to the media quite strongly. A bit of the actual media, a piece of sponge or a few ceramic rings (your friend can donate up to a third of their media, so long as it's replaced) will do your tank much more good.

You're going to have to be doing a lot of water changes as well as treating the whitespot, so make sure you can calculate how much of the medication you need to add to your new water.
