Ok, firstly I understand they're not actually Corydoras?

But more importantly I read a number of sites that said they weren't truly a tropical species, preferred colder waters, and wouldn't live long if kept at tropical temperatures. Is this accurate or are they able to live at the 'normal' temperatures of 24-25 degrees C along with Corydoras species?

Yes. They are Scleromystax.

This is a "your mileage may vary question." Yes, ideally they should be kept at cooler temperatures, not exceeding 80º F. They do not do well at warmer temps, especially as it concerns their spawning requirements. That being said, I have always kept mine at a bit warmer temps and the last spawn I had was in the dead of summer. And it was really hot. So, I don't know if I helped you at all, but that has been my experience. - Frank

Hmm, yeah it was helpful. Not really concerned about tyring to breed them, but I don't want to get them in a community tank if they're going to miserable, ill, and die.

Can't set the new tank up yet anyway, so got a while to think about it.

I have also heard of some people keeping these in the normal temp range (74-78 F). I have been thinking about some too, but was concerned about keeping them in warmer waters. It seems Frank has been successful, so I might give it a try too

Here mine I keep with other cory and Temperature range 72-78 F because my large fish tank and got 2 thermo heat set different range so who's like cooler go one side and other a little warmer and they doing fine. It is very nice fish for addition.

If the worst happens and they don't seem to do well we do have a hospital tank which could be set up at a cooler temperature for them, until a suitable permanent home is sorted.
