I bought 3 young cory julli yesterday,2 of them are very active, the third seemed withdrawn and stayed still at the bottom of the tank.he looked a lot smaller and younger than the other 2,also its barbels were very short.

Anyway i noticed earlier it was floating around the tank so i got it out. :rip:

I rang up the lfs and explained, anyway they want me to bring in sample of my water, didn't believe me when i told them i tested it this morning out of habit and the readings were ammonia/nitrite 0,nitrate 20(10 out of tap)ph 7.8,

They want to test my water before they replace the cory.
The cories cost £5 each.

It's very possible he was injured when they netted him. I've seen employees pin them against the side of the tank before and tried to explain to more than one that it's much easier to net them with 2 nets but they don't listed.

Having you bring in tank water is normal. They want to make sure that there weren't any issues with the water that caused the death.

Hi Harlequin,
Sorry to hear yours news about the Corydora...Im very lucky where i buy my fish are very careful netting them.. However i did have a Zebra die but think that was my fault (Swim Bladder) I think i believe i was overfeeding..My fish shop also insist on a water sample in a case like yours....Its a blow.. but sadly thats fishing keeping.. I used to keep and breed Gouldian birds .. they would im sure wake up in the morning and say "Seems a good day to die and just basically drop off perch...(If you google them you will see what great colourful birds they are)
Maybe some fish the same.

Regards Zac

It's a sad loss, anyway i've got it in a bag ready to take back  and a sample of tank water.

It's the first fish i've had die on me

As rooster mentioned, take a seperate sample of water to be tested.

Dont put the dead cory in the sample of water just incase it begins to rot and effect the ammonia levels.

Andy

lol Rooster i thought the same on the sheet they give you when buying fish....5mls per test.. do they drink the rest lol Regards Zac

LOL!!-thanks for making me laugh!!
i did take a separate sample of tank water, although not a pint!!,she tested it all clear,so she replaced poor dead cory!
i also got another 3 so hopefully they will be hardier than the one that died.

I've got them acclimatising now, little so n so's are trying to launch themselves out the top of the bag!!

Great they replaced your Cory.. and hopefully the new ones and the remaining others will be fine.. Did not the Local fish shop give you any idea what in their opinion happened...Wish you well from here on in Regards Zac

I have recently brought a young julli corydora for my albion cory in my 42 L, the new cory looks quite stillish, i hope mine pulls through, He cost me £5.83 ish, I have already had one of my 3 new fish from pets at home die, im never going back again.
My dad had to drive back to the further away store we purchased the 3 fish from, i had to bring the deceased fish with me (yuk) and they asked for a water sample, before i get a replacement. So i had to go back home and back otu to a closer store, then explain the whole situation again.....
"your water parameters are perfect" HA!

Thanks zac :good:

Well the lfs said it could be due to transporting it,may have got stressed!,well they were pretty still when i first put them in,now they're acting nuts, following each other about, don't think they realise they are bottom dwellers, they're having great fun going up and down the tank doing loop the loop, even trying to shoal with the harleys!!

I was concerned with one of them,it's pretty small, around an inch, they're all very young,so i just hope they'll settle in ok.

Emily-i vowed never too buy from pets @ home after seeing what appalling conditions the poor fish live in,2 huge 10 inch plus catfish in 3 ft tank, other fish being eaten by its tank mates etc!!

I buy from maidenhead aquatics, they acclimatise and quarentine all fish for 7 plus days before selling them, they may not be happy jolly staff(they always look gloomy)lol!!,but they keep pretty good fish,i've got all my fish from them and touch wood they've all been ok,except poor cory!

I have 3 Albino Corys and mine do what your new ones do..O.k. they do their bottom vacuuming bit .. but then look out away they go shooting around the tank like crazy lol.. Then it all stops and they lie on the bottom without moving.. When i first saw this thought .. something not right here..now i know different I just watch to see if they "Blink " lol cause they are so still.. Love the guys and they get along great with the zebras, Haelequins and Endlers Ohhhh and they do at times give the assissin snails shells a clean lol Regards Zac

Hi Emilythe strange,
Agreed it does turn you off a fish shop when the fish you bought from them die so quickly like yours and Harlequins have...I have yet to get myself a quantine tank as i think it will be a very wise buy....Problem we have as fishkeepers to us the fish are something we do our best for so they are happy and healthy.. to Most fish shops they are no more than money ....Here we have 3 fish shops One the tanks are filthy the staff are mostly part time students and dead fish in every tank ( I feel so sad for those fish in the tanks) the next one is o.k. but rather dont have a lot of time for anyone But the third Great.. Clean tanks, no dead fish, clear water in fact all the shop spotless Now they do have a few part time lads working there week ends but they only on the till and sweeping up etc the full timers are brill ..appear to know their fish and whats best to go with what... so thats where i go Their Marine section is awesome......someone once told me if you see a dirty milk bottle on a doorstep will probaby give you some idea of how the people live in the house Same with fish shops clean tanks knowleable staff= healthy fish Regards Zac
