carnt wait for them to breed and have more

I have a group of 9 cory which have spawned once and are going to again in the next few weeks, keep on uprooting everthing though. Great little fish. :good:

Hi beechey :)

I saw the pictures you posted on another thread and your C. sterbai look good. One thing you don't want to do is to try to hurry them into breeding. Give them some time to get settled and eat some good food. It might take some time for them to recover from being shipped around. When they are ready they will surprise you by leaving a batch of eggs on the glass when you least expect it. :D

Not that i'm hurrying mine but i was wondering about how long until you might expect some eggs? do they need to be together for a year or more or do they settle in in a matter of months?

Hi Sirron :)

It's impossible to predict. If they are mature corys, in good health, they might spawn within a few days of being introduced into your tank, or they might never spawn. It's not like livebearers where they mate and you can estimate the number of days until the female gives birth. When the conditions are right, they will spawn or, then again, they might not.

Feeding them a balanced diet with extra portions of bloodworms or live blackworms will help condition them and enable the females to develop eggs. Doing water changes with water a few degrees cooler than they are used to, and rinsing out the filter media in used tank water, might stimulate them to spawn. Some species of cory have not spawned in captivity yet. Some species, like C. paleatus and C. aeneus, which have been tank raised for generations, seem to more readily spawn than many of the other species.

The main thing is to have lots of patience. Once they start spawning there is a good chance that they will do it repeatedly. What kind of corys do you have?

I have one group of c. aeneus 5 albinos and 1 bronze and I have one group of 6 c arcuatus. I've only had them for 3 and 2 weeks so I'm not expecting anything. I was just curious about how long they took to settle in. I know that they are quite long lived for fish so I didn't know if it took longer for them to get to know one another :) Mine are not quite full grown but I believe pretty close. The c. aeneus being 3 in (ish) and the c. arcuatus about 2 and some change.

Hi Sirron :)

The C. aeneus will probably spawn for you, and maybe even soon, but don't be disappointed if the C. arcuatus do not. They are not impossible to breed, but are very difficult. I've had a batch for several years, and watched the female swell with eggs, but nothing ever happened. Nevertheless, they are beautiful corys and I've been very happy with them. I'm sure you will enjoy keeping them too. :D

I didn't get them specifically to spawn I think they're cute :) However I would be thrilled if I woke up to eggs on the glass one day. It's good to know that at least the c. aeneus might spawn for me :D It won't be a problem with 5 being albino and 1 bronze will it? I've heard that they get on fine but how would that effect the fry? I'm guessing the albino is recesive so if the bronze spawned with one of them that would leave me with bronze fry right? I don't think i'll have to worry about that because my bronze thinks he's a c. arcuatus!! Thanks for all the help and info though. I didn't mean to hijack this thread, oops

Hi Sirron :)

It should be no problem at all because they are of the same species. Have you looked at the pinned topics at the top of this section? If not, check out the article on breeding and the video of them spawning. It will give you something to think about for the day it actually happens. When it does, I hope you'll share the good news with us. :D

Were the fish that you bought the ones that the breeder used to breed with or were they just babies from his breeders?

yeah they were breeding, why you ask
Then they are old enough to breed.

Have you decided whether you are going to take the eggs out of the tank or take the fish out of the tank or put them into a floating container?
Do you a tank ready to put them in?
Do you have food to feed them with?
