Hello - I got home and noticed that the cory I bought yesterday isn't looking quite like he should. I am guessing it is stress as his body looks free of disease. He will swim normally for a bit then he ends up with his nose to the sky and float to the top. He will reach the surface - stay there for a bit and then decide to swim around again. I think his breathing is rapid.

I went ahead and added one tablespoon of aquarium salt. (10 gal. tank). I didn't want to add any more as the cories don't do well with salt, but I wanted to take the chance in case it helped him out a bit.

I am not holding out much hope for him. My question is: do you know of any diseases that would cause them to wind up vertical? I just don't want to overlook something and end up with a sick tank full of fish.

Thanks in advance.

Oh eta: water is fine....tested it today and yesterday when I brought him home (and two days before that) I'm a bit paranoid about that. Ammonia lvl is the lowest color on my test chart so I added a bunch of ammo chips just to be safe.

Don't add any salt, even a little is bad for cories  ...I had this trouble with one of my peppered corydoras once... the poor little guy didn't make it :-( Do a 20-40% water change now then everyday for a week do a 20% water change. This heped a lot in my case with one of the peppered cories but with the other... I was already too late :-(

Good Luck

Well, I had to go out for a bit tonight and came back to find him gone. I thought that would be the case.

I knew that cories didn't do too well with salt, but I thought that you could add a bit for stress. I know our lfs does half doses when getting in new cories (not that lfs do what is right...)

Hmmm...well I guess I should do some water changes to get that salt out so it won't affect the other cories in there.

Does it sound like it could have been stress? My water is fine. I have newborn guppies all swimming happily (until they get eaten)...No one else seems the least bit ill.
