this morning i looked in my quarintine tank and 1 ov my new C.ARCUATUS is dead
i tested all my water and everythings fine. so dont know why it died i havent lost a fish for ages and im really gutted about it

I'm sorry, drewry. Sometimes they just don't survive the stress and the trips. It's back to survival and adaption.

I lost a whole shipment in a week of imported barbus/butterfly barbs. They were very expensive and apparantly I am the only one who lost any. But the galaxies that came in the same shipment, went through the same acclimation and into the same tank did fine. It is hard for me to believe I did something.

I have had fish that just failed to thrive--sometimes one, sometimes a species.

The poor thing could have stressed out or gotten knocked around somewhere along the line of transport.

I am sorry drewry. :-(

Oh man, sorry to hear that drewry.

Did he act any differently than the others? Did he look different than the others? Do you have enough water agitation to keep the DO high? What about water temp?

(Ya, I know, this is drewry I'm asking but sometimes it's the simple things we miss, at least I do...)

And sometimes sh|t just happens.

keep the others in the quarantine tank for a couple more weeks just to make sure they haven't got a nasty bug.

thxs jollysue & Cory_Dad
i think it was just down to the individual fish like you say jollysue and maybe the stress was to mutch after been shiped, all the others are fine and acting normal with no signs ov illness ill keep an eye on them though ,everything was fine Cory_Dad it looked in really good health i even put an extra 8 inch air stone in before i got them in the quarintine tank as im only used to puting 6 at a time in there ,and with there been 18 all in one go i thought id put extra airation in ,my temps at 24oC in the quarintine tank :good:

i am going to keep them in quarintine for at least 3 weeks now Colin_T and keep an eye on them :good:

What did you use to keep the qt tank cycled, drewry?

Could you have had a spike from so many fish? Did I understand 18 in a tank that usually has 6?

If the fish was weak or stressed and there was a spike it could have done him. And not shown up when you tested. I would also verify your tests with an lps if you rely on them. They can go off.

The air stone would give them access to more oxygen, but it would not stop an ammonia spike. If there was a sudden increase in bio load involving 18 fish at once, there would be a spike if nothing was done to relieve it. That is done with frequent small water changes which also adds oxygen. The tank can be cycled quickly by adding mature media from other tanks, but small water changes would still be needed.

It might be advisable to be doing some extra small water changes to be sure--daily.

the tank was allready cycled jollysue.

its been up and running non stop for nearly a year with either endlers or guppys in it to keep it cycle,
and i only got some new testing kits about 7 weeks ago jollysue so there pretty new, and it was only last night i did a 20% water change wich iv been doing daily with the amount of fish in the tank ,and testing water daily aswell and the waters been fine since i got the corys with no spike in anything ,so i dont think its out to do with that side ov things hopefull it was just down to the fish been weak and nothing more serious

Just checking, drewry. It alarmed me when you said you had more than 2x upped the bioload. That is a lot to add at once. A mini cycle will happen if you increase the fish load like that without doing something to increase the nitrifying, etc., bacteria, cycled or not. The tank cycles to the fish and bioload. If you increase the load, it has to cycle again. While the others could be strong, a weakened fish may succumb to the extra stress. A few guppys will not cycle the tank to the load of 18 Corys added at once.

The nitrifying bacteria have to increase with the increase in fish load. I suppose you know that, but I had to check. :)

yea i new that jollysue i did put a few drops of filter start in to increase bactaria bioload
well up to now the otheres are fine and really active with no signs of illness so it must ov been just down to the cory itself :good:

Keep in mind C. arcuatus is one of the more sensitive cories. I bought 8 at the LFS once and oe of them died that same night. I went back and got replacement and they are all still alive today. Just keep an eye on the others.

Sorryfor the third degree, drewry.

Glad the rest are doing well.

I lost some arcuatus once when there was an upset in my small Cory tank. So I know how they are, too.

yea ill keep a close eye on them Barracuda518 up to now the otheres seem to be doing fine.

no probs jollysue i know you was only trying to help thxs :good:
