Cories On Sand Or Gravel?

After finishing a fishless cycle my friend is after some pygmy cories after me cooing over them lol.

But, he has gravel on the bottom. Does he need sand for corys? Will they suffer if they're on gravel?

Playsand is the cheapest; it does need lots of washing, but it's what I have for my cories. I got mine from Argos, but Tesco and other places do it too

This is not true. They lose their barbels if the substrate isn't cleaned and if they get a fungal or bacterial infection. This can happen on sand or gravel.

It's more likely on gravel though..and anyway, they enjoy digging in sand so much it's a shame to deny them the chance to express their natural behaviour.

I'm sorry I do not agree. They will express their natural behaviour on both sand and gravel from what I have seen. I do respect your opinion though,but we obviously will never agree on this one

I agree with Caprichoso on this one. Either play sand or a fine, smooth gravel is OK with corys. Maintenance is the key. Uneaten food will feed harmful bacteria if gravel is not vacuumed regularly and this can lead to bacterial infection and loss of barbels.

Agreeing with above...have corys on both sand and SMOOTH gravel and never had a problem with them losing barbels on gravel. I have noticed the corys do enjoy the sand more as they can sift through it easier but that may just be the type of gravel I have.

i wont use gravel for corys, they just love to dig around in my sand as do many of my other fish. Although nice rounded gravel of any size suffice, you then lack the cuteness factor of them digging for food
