Is there any han dy way to lower the temperture in a tank? Mine jumped to a lil over 80 today I considered ice but its city water and there fore chlorinated...Any clever tricks?

I had this problem so turned of the heater and limited light use for a couple of days. Seemed to have worked.

fill a plastic water bottle with water, leave an inch at the top of air, squeeze the bottle a bit and then seal the cap. put it in the freezer 24 hours. then you have an oversize novelty ice cube to cool your tank with (you will need to cycle bottles through the freezer to keep up the cooling effect). To be honest this is only good for a couple of degrees but it can take the edge off.

Lights off and aiming a fan at the water surface to increase evaporative cooling will also help.
