I am looking for a fish or two to add to my 20 gallon tank. I am looking for a hardy fish. and the bigger the better but not to big for i only have 20 gallons. The fis wil be for a community tank. THe tank already has 6 neon tetrass, 2 mollys, and 2 bala sharks.

The first question that comes to me is, how fast do these bala sharks grow? Cuz one of my books says they get 12" long and the other book says 14".

My second question is, will the sharks eat the neons when they get a little bigger (assuming they are currently very small)? :-(

Third, I'm

The balas sharks will definately get too big for a 20G tank, but they are very peaceful IME and shouldn't hassle other fish.

If possible then return the balas to the lfs, then maybe go for a Bristlenose pleco or maybe a flying fox.

Loaches are another popular bottom dweller but be careful with adult size, there, too (avoid clown loach in particular, I think).

the sharks are very small now they are about 1.5 inches if they ever do get to big for the tank ill go buy another. :D but right now the tank is plenty big. I love my golden loach, he is like a vacuum on the bottom. Although i don't see him till nighttime because he digs under the gravel ;)

Oh! You didn't include the loach when you listed your fish in the first post. I can't find "golden loach" in the fish encyclopaedia. Anyone know how big this variety gets in a small aquarium?

If you plan on keeping the balas, and you also have a loach, 6 neon tetras, and 2 mollies, I'd consider adding more fish a risky business. Are your mollies male or female? They may be having babies and further populating your tank. The balas will grow, almost certainly to 6" or more, even in the tight quarters, I'm not sure how quickly. The loach will undoubtedly be at least 3 to 4", possibly more. Mollies are what, 1 1/2 to 2"? My book says 4", do they really get that big??

Anyway, it sounds to me like you have a minimum of 13 to 14" of fish in your aquarium now, and it sounds like they are juveniles. Even if the balas stayed tiny, which they won't, you'll have plenty of fish inches in your tank before long (going by the 1" per gallon rule of thumb).

If your tank is well planted and has really excellent filtration, you might could add more neons, or a group of cardinal tetras, a couple more mollies, or a pair of dwarf gourami (honey are smallest) . . . but you said the bigger the better, so you might want to add just one fish that doesn't mind being on its own, but swims mid to upper level (cause your bottom is full).

How about a betta or a paradise fish?

i suggest to get a betta fish. it will add color to your tank

The Golden Loach will grow to about 8 inches. They are also known as the Sucking loach/Chinese Algae Eater or Gyinocheilus aymonieri. You have two forms. Golden and Grey/Silver spieces. When young they are peacefull but as they grow aggression is heavy!!

Graeme.

Ah, the infamous CAE. :look: I have seen other threads dedicated to them but had not heard them called a golden loach before.

Steve-O, I'm thinking you've got a much bigger tank in your future! :hyper: But :-( I hope that loach isn't going to bully your balas down the road!

Anybody know how much time Steve-Os got before he has to move the big fishies out and can get some new buds for his mollies and neons? :D
