Convince Me To Change

Not just mushies and zoas - Leathers, kenya trees, xenia etc there are quite a few to choose from.

Our Dark Lord will talk you through a low light tank, but they are not really for a new salty

There is alot of softies that you could choose from including:
Zoas
xenia
gsp
leathers
Ricordea
Gorgonian (I think only one specific species)
Mushrooms
And then there is always non photosynthetic corals that only need feeding.

EDIT-Seffie beet me to it. :sly:

ahh ok, but why is that? I'd prefer to stay well away from anything 'advanced' in the early stages.

Their feeding requirements would quickly foul a tank

because they require feeding rather then deriving food from light. this raises problems because to feed the means you pollute your tank, the foods they take can be a bit obscure, and about a million other reasons i can think of.

a few of the NPS/azoox corals (thats corals that require NO light) are easy to keep but require very good husbandry. if you are intrested at a later date then i can and will help you to set up and keep these corals but for a salty novice you will be setting yourself up for a fall.

a nice zoa garden is always a good starting point :)

PS my idea of easy to keep and other peoples dont always match up lol

how? (sorry, will be behaving quite a lot like an annoying, inqusitive child on this thread).

And how are they fed? I presume food is added to the tank and the filter is turned off, whilst leaving the powerheads on, thus leaving the food in there long enough to flow over the corals and give them a chance to feed?

oh how I sometimes loathe the 30 second posting limit!

FISH FOR A 3 FOOT TANK

Any nice resources/lists out there that I could use to start to be a wish list for the tank?

well azoox feeding is pretty diverse as many corals do not make energy via photosynthisis.

things like sun corals and dendrophyllia will take large meaty foods into a large polyp (LPS)
others such as gorgonians will take zooplankton and phytoplankton into smaller polyps.
chillis, denronepthyea, some sea fans etx will only take very small planktonic life and need near on constant feeding (not the chilli)

the food pollutes the water as alot of it isnt eaten, in the ocean this doesnt matter as it will decay and feed algae/ planton/ bacteria etc. in the closed system this has no where to go, rots and produces ammonia and phosphates which as you know are bad :)

i could go into much more detail but the above sums it up without me writing to many long words.

I can see Sorgan lurking so will leave that question for him :good:

Its a really good idea to think aobut fish first - that way you end up with the correct size tank and dont have to upgrade within three months. Take a look on the fish of the week threads and the resource centre

that's enough for me to begin my understanding! :good:

thank god as my 2 week old is keeping me awake long enough that long words are failing me lol.

go with softies a start and pick out some nice reef safe fish and we can continue the azoox convo at a later date :)

two week old? My daughter was born on the 4th July.....

Are you aware of these? Seem to be working well for us. She sleeps up to 5hrs during the night.

just had a quick read of the FOTW threads. It's quite daunting starting pretty much from scratch all over again!

OK, here's a few ideas....bash me on the head if they are not appropriate.

Flame Angel
Percula clown - possibly a pair
Goby & shrimp pair (dont mind which goby or shrimp, but must be a proven pair!)
Pyjama wrasse
Dartfish - firefish
Something a bit unusual - a frog fish perhaps?
Yellow tail blue damsel

Presume I can't have all of these in a 125L, so what would be a good mix?
Really need to go to a LFS to see more up close and personal.

May I also reccomend the 'slumber bear' to you both! :good:

And, welcome to the salty side ZoddyZod! I wonder if I may be able to tempt you into using your planned new, bigger tank for marine instead of converting your current one? I too bought my larger tank with the plan of keeping some larger cichlids in it, until the salty side took me, I found the marine side much more worthy of my larger tank than any cichlid! A larger tank is also much easier to keep stable! :D

 good old swadling - you dont need to buy fancy stuff from Mothercare to do that - its what we always used to do (us old-ens :p )

It's hunger over being fussy. She wants food every 3 hours or so but besides that she's usually quiet. The problem is that when she cries the dog starts barking lol
