im just tryin to make sure what i think i know is correct

orange on the convicts = female

pink convicts can be bred with regular convicts

they pair up and breed in pairs

cave breeders, but most likely lay eggs on anything

what im not sure about..

10 gallon tank... if i buy 4 of them.. what r ppls thoughts on if they will pair off and breed safely in a 10 gallon tank..

10 gallon setups on sale for $40 so i thought id try breeding an easy cichlid.. i was told convicts are easiest.. what about firemouths... keep in mind 10 gallon tank will be the tank for whatever cichlids i buy

any other advice, info would be appreciated thanks everyone

WOO HOOO

TFF IS BACK !!!

:D everything seems right cept the size of the tank........not sure that a 10 gall is going to be big enough for convicts ...especially 4 of them. Full size they get to approx 4 - 5 inches and they're not exactly the most mild mannered of cichlids.....the other thing is they are very easy to breed but they're also  extremely aggressive when breeding and very prolific...

have you thought about something like a pair of rams or maybe apistogramma.....they don't grow as large as the convicts and if the tank is really well planted with plenty of places to hide or retreat a 10 gall may be big enough for them

the other cichlidiots here will have a better idea of the temperament of some of the other dwarf cichlids that would be happy and could breed safely in that size tank :D

hm..... i have a baby grow out tank right now thats full of guppy fry .... i also have 2 10 gallons, 1 with almost breeding bettas and 1 with tetras and couple livebeareres in there.... i could free up those 2 tanks for babies... and im sure my lfs would like some free fish ......im not sure yet what to do about the 10 gallon tank thing.... i want something easy to breed that wont be too expensive... i thought about kribensis but im not sure.... convicts can breed when theyre 2-3 inches correct?... 2 small ones would be ok to breed in a 10 ... then i just have to find a place for them as they get bigger..... i could separate them into their own 10 gallon tanks i guess but that would be using most of my tanks .. no room for tetras or bettas .... hmm.... ill have to think about that one.... i heard paradise fish are easy to breed... anyone know much about them... are they more suitable for a 10 gallon tank ?

thanks for the replies :D

I got a pair of convicts in a 10 gallon with a 4 inch diameter garden pot and two 3 inch diameter garden pots and they love it.

I would be very worried about aggression in that small tank. If they don't really get on your gonna have a problem. I wouldn't dare put any convits in a tank smaller than 20L. Just my 2 cents.

well... checked out my bank account..
i needed about $150 for canucks jersey..

and i have $252 in bank acount so i do have enough for tank and some convicts.. i think im gonna try them in the 10 and see what happens... they can be seperated if anything goes wrong

:D convicts better breed :D

If you have the money now, goto walmart buy a 55 gallon kit for like 150. Do it right the first time :)

a 10 gallon tank will not cut it for a breeding pair of cons its too SMALL!!!!! go out andget a bigger tankif you have the money..

I have 4 in a 40gal. I'm trying to get a pair going but right now they are pretty individualized. I have 3 males and 1 female. (i thought 1 male was a female at first). Anyway the lucky girl doesn't seem to want to pair up right now even though the 3 males have been strutting their stuff.

As soon as she picks one, 2 are going back. I have had two pairs breeding at the same time in the same exact tank along with other fish, but i have no desire to have 100 convicts at some point. I'll stick to 1 pair to keep the fry numbers down and hope most don't make it.

hey bettabananas ....our lfs won't take convicts even if you're giving them away - they just can't sell them and they create problems in their tanks with their aggression.

Possible to talk to your local shops and make sure that they will take them if you breed them cos once they start breeding ....the convicts are very good at it

thanks
