Confused?

why is there so much clamour for a general chat forum?

Does no-one have email, msn, pm's or even a telephone nowadays? Trying to compare that with the introduction of a science forum is like comparing, well 2 incomparable things!

I guess I need to be very specific and say that I'm looking for a personal announcements or achievements forum. General chat would be messy I agree with that. Sorry I keep mentioning general chat when I really am only concerned with personal announcements.

And so we return to the problem of:

How do you define what is an occurence worthy of announcing?

As CFC said earlier, and was detailed in the previous thread on this, what is important to some is not to others.

If you apply rules, some people will be upset if their achievement falls just outside of what would have to be an officious line, and will want to post anyway. If you have no rules then it becomes general chat. The potential for problems is huge.

These are problems that would need to be overcome before we can really look at progressing the idea of an announcements forum any further than just an idea.

The science forum doesn't have these problems. It is quite easy to define what science really is through mention of evidence, hypothesis, theory and peer review. Furhtermore, as mentioned above, the mods are more willing to take a chance with the science forum as it is fish related, and thus related to the core function of this forum.

andy I think the point was that people throw out ideas too easily.

But they didn't. The debate on Announcements went to 52 posts, and is still open here. The topic was actively posted on for 5 days, and can still be added to.

There were very good points made in that thread, which can be succintly distilled to what I have posted below, that the announcements would be a good idea, but somewhat unworkable without drifting towards a general chat style theme.

It looks to me like sour grapes that one suggestion has received unanimous support (from members and mods), but the one the OP likes has not got universal approval due to obvious problems that are discussed at length in the previous debate.

I think anything is worthy of announcing, it's the members who can't keep their angst to themselves who always ruin any announcement thread that comes up. The threads start out good, and continue good till one sore member mentions that they are breaking rules by posting an announcement, then it turns into a mud slinging fest as people voice their dissaproval of that single responce. Recently rhiannas thread had just that happen, and some simple editing saved the day, it is naw continuing on in much the same manner as it started and I find it refreshing to see just how nice and personable the people on this forum can be!

If something is not of importance to you, you simply need not read it. I think that could be one of the mentionings in the rule book for an announcements forum, but if it is then read and post away just try and be nice. Like I said it would have to be personal announcements as to avoid general chat in the sence that has been the bigest problem as of late (ie: virginia tech, sept 11th, yeltsen dying etc) But what's the problem with letting members know when you've had a baby or gotten married, graduated college, bought a car (well autos allows for that), or had a family member pass away?

We can continue to discuss if you like but lets keep it civil so this thread doesn't have to be closed.

and by the way, it truly isn't sour grapes. I've only been recently aware of the push for an announcements forum (in the alst week or so) and have decided to put in my POV.

But where do you draw the line on what can be announced? If you allow anything to be announced then it is general chat.

To prevent announcements becoming just a whole load of random general posts there must be a line drawn somewhere. Now where do we draw this line? That is the question that nobody in favour of the annoucnements forum has been able to answer.

We can continue to discuss if you like but lets keep it civil so this thread doesn't have to be closed.

I am intrigued as to who that is aimed at.

Read a little further down and I gave a list of stuff. Basically anything that has to do with you personally (as long as it is appropriate for minors to read obviously) that includes education, hatches matches and dispatches (loved that by the way), and any other thing that has to do with the member personally. That way we don't have general chat about politics etc.

I amed the civility plea to everyone who wants to continue to participate, you included!

So what if a member is really proud of christening their child? This gives relgion a chance to pop up. Anything can lead off into more general conversations.

How about if someone announces they can now vote as they are 18, that leads politics straight into it.

Someone gets married, someone else starts up about whether amrriage is relevant in this day and age. Suppose a gay person announces their marriage, that will upset all the backward thinking idiots.

How will we treat a thread where someone posts an impressive test result and someone else posts that was nothing, they beat that score with ease?

It would take a lot of work to moderate and keep the forum on the straight and narrow which will obviously detract from the central core of the forum, that of keeping fish. The only way to keep it friendly would be to heavily restrict the topics covered and to ban any response which does not agree with the OP for fear of it turning into a flame fest. This is not worthwhile having.

If you really want to announce something, put it in your sig, it will then appear in every post you have made on the forum.

Consider this:

Why do we need an announcement forum? It isn't needed to allow people to announce things (as covered, sigs do that and reach a wider audience), it would appear it is desired so that people can announce and have others comment back nice things.

Will take it up with admin from here on out! Frankly I am growing weary of the same tired responses, none of which I have ever seen actually occur on this forum.

no offence meant by the way!

There a site that does general chat they banned politics and religion, it runs smoothly now most of the time.
You will never get members from spoilings things, even happens on fish threads.

All the responses given by me and others (including andy) are perfectly valid, just because they are perhaps from a different point of view than yours, it doesnt make them the "same tired responses" :/

You can take it up with admin if you like, but bear in mind that this topic has been taken up with him before very recently and quite frankly the count of views towards a general announcement forum hasnt progressed since the past threads.

Just a thought

Don't get me wrong, I realise they are valid. Any and all points of view are valid, I just don't think they are very strong reasons for not giving this a try that's all!

thanks for the kinder tone this time by the way!
