Hi All

Now, I plan on getting a bigger tank and will up my tetras to 7 but I seriously seriously love galaxy rasboras (fireworks danios - they seem to have many names). Here's a pic so people know what I'm talking about...

BUT, I keep coming across many conflicting sites when it comes to their maximum size. Some say they're a micro species and get a maximum of 1 inch, others say they get 2 - 2.5 inches... I don't know what is right. I dont want to end up getting more than I can, but I also don't want a tiny school if I can have more.

I know there is at least one member here who has them (I just can't for the life of me remember who), but does anyone else? or can anyone else shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance
Willow

micro fish - 1inch max.

Believe the finally settled on common name is Celestial Pearl Danio (they are a danio, not a rasborra)

Seriously Fish have a good write up about them here

Im actually looking into a little breeding project with them in the new year so i've been researching them a lot in the last few months.

You would be perfectly fine with half a dozen+ in your 48 litre, they are extremely small and would benefit greatly from some moss for cover and plenty of other live plants.

If your tank is quite bare on the plant front, i wouldnt get any, they really do like lots of cover.

I currently have 4, two female and two male in an 8 litre nano tank. Grabbed them while i could from my local shop as i rarely see them around! Will be moving them to a 30 litre at the weekend :)

They are excellent little fish, but they are under threat of extinction (still) and many sites highly recommend that you dont buy them just for the sake of it, but you actually buy them to breed. Im not sure how dated that idea is now, there isnt much new information out there that i can find. Im really not sure how many domestic breeders there are, but from all accounts, they are a "relatively" easy little fish to breed and being so small, space requirements are also small. Which is great, as i've got two spare shelves on my rack waiting :D

They grow to about an inch in lentgh.

I have 6 in my tank (I rescued two and bought another 4) but planning on getting more when they go into their permenent home :)

They are quite a skittish fish in my opinion but they are really pretty!

I would be willing to bet that the conflicting is because two similar species share the same markings, but are in fact different species. It happens fairly often. Considering the consensus above, I would wager that most of the fish being sold under the common name are the smaller of the two species.

oooh breeding them??? AIIIIEH! I never thought about that! I'm getting a bigger tank soon, so seeing as they're a micro species, I could dedicate my 48 litre to them :D How many do you think I could have in my 48litre? I have lots of moss in there at the moment for the shrimp, but more is easily acquired if needed. As for other live plants, I think elodea would be a good one, as it has fine leaves so may act like moss.

I'd use the 48litre as a dedicated species tank btw.. apart from the shrimp ofc

Tizer, did you get yours from Bourne End? I saw Kat had got some piddly little babies ones in! I'd not have noticed them if it wasnt for the fact id been hangin g around for about 5 hours LOL

I kept a shoal of about 20 in my Roma 125 a few years back with WCMMs and they bred like rabbits and were great fun!

Have some at work now that i am trying to convince want to breed but other fish keep jumping in with them lol. I love how they fire up beautiful orange and speckly!

One of my favourites for sure! Got little 'trout faces'!

Na i didnt get them from MA, there is a World of Water near me that had some decent sized ones in. The wheatley shop had some very young ones too, didnt want them, couldnt sex them. :\
