Ammonia could possibly have a high pH, I'm not sure but I wouldn't worry until your cycle is complete. What is the pH of your tap water? If even your tap water has a high pH, you could possibly add some bogwood which seems to lower it a little. Anyway, as I said; you shouldn't worry yet.

well I tested my tapwater yesterday and got 7.8 but I did not leave it to stand first. I'm not gonna check it again just yet cos obviously it uses test fluid. will leave it til my cycle is complete. It may not even be a problem as my brother in law (guppi) gets just less than 7 and he has the same water supply as me.

I heard that about bogwood m8. will try it if I have a problem

cheers Josh. Hope your cycle picks up again. another m8 of mine, gazanimal has had a similiar problem with his fluval. everything seemed to be going ok then it all ground to a halt. not sure where he is at with it at the moment.

good luck m8 and thanks for the advice

A high pH is good on a fish less cycle, the ammonia will cause it rise. It's when it drops below 7 you should be concerned, at that point you can use bicarbonate of soda (not baking soda) to buffer and raise the pH.

Interesting, there may be a difference of common names here. In the USA, our boxes of pure bicarbonate of soda are labeled "Baking Soda," whereas our boxes of baking soda that might have other added things such as flour are usually labeled "Baking Powder."
