I am about to buy some Plants for my tank. Ive never been really successful with plants, but I keep trying different things. Anyway Ive just changed my substrate to sand, so I plan to pot the plants to give their roots somewhere to grow. Can I buy Normal Peat from the garden centre for them? This would also help soften my water, which is a good thing for my fish.

Any suggestions?

Avoid using peat or compost from the garden centre - you don't know what nasty chemicals/pesticides/additives they may have put in it. Do you or anybody you know keep rabbits/guinea pigs? Their droppings can make good fertilizer, just put a one or two pellets in between the roots.

Also, what plants are you going to buy? I've found that my Hygrophila difformis and Echinodorus tennellus grow well without any fertilizer at all!
