done a 80% waterchange tonight,i do this every 6 weeks. i fill the tank up via a hose connected to the mixer tap in the shower. so i start fillng it up matched the temps first.leave it to fill and go and have a coffee.unknown to me 6 year old son gets out of bed, goes to the toilet turns thermostat on mixer tap.i goo to check the tank, now sitting at 55 degrees. so far lost 4 neons,6 dwarf pencil fish,i pygmy cory,1 lorentensis cory.must have been the shock of the cold water.dreading to see what awaits me in the morning

So sorry to hear this news, i hope you dont lose any more

Sorry to read, fingers crossed that most (hopefully all the rest) made it. I know what you mean about the dread, I've gone into the lounge each day for the last four days to find more dead fish, despite medicating for Ich.

well got up this morning 5 more dead pencil fish, the swordtails i have are not looking to good, fins are clamped the female looks like her skin is sort of peeling off, could this be caused by the sudden drop in temp?

scott

Do you only change water every six weeks? The temperature will be what's killing your fish, but the likely sudden change of perameters from an 80% change after six weeks won't be helping either.

I was thinking the same wouldnt u be better of just changing water once a week doing a 20 percent or something

no i do a 20-30% weekly,every six weeks i do a 70-80% waterchange. i'm amazed i did not affect the blue rams

Sorry to read you found more casualties this morning. :(

Who else has survived, scotty, besides the Blue Rams?

Any idea how quickly the temp rose back from 55F to ~80F (presuming that is your norm because of the Rams)?

In hindsight, I'm wondering if my own panick at seeing Ich and notching the heater thermostat straight up to 32C (although it only managed 29C) stressed out my decora group and Steatocranus "dad", because the 300W heater in their 140l tank raised the temp from 23C within four hours tops. This morning was my first morning of not seeing dead fish for five days, I was convinced my tiny Microsynodontis polli was going to die overnight, he/she was highly stressed swimming vertically midwater in a corner of the tank. But he/she was still there this morning, maybe enjoying the concentrated current, but I was so relieved when it returned to normal behaviour and shot off under bogwood when I opened the curtains!

i always have my temp around 72,had no problems with the rams they spawn every month.

apistos
green/gold laser corys
pepper corys
otos
2 male guppies
2 bristlenose
1 male swordtail
all seem to be doing fine

female sword still not looking to good

kinda worried i might get an outbreak of white spot with the sudden dip in temp.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

If you are doing a 20%-30% wc one a week, I don't see why you need to be doing such a big wc every 6 weeks.
Also, such a big change in 1 go is going to put the system under a lot of strain and subject the fish to a big swing in parameters.
