Hi,

At the start of last week I got rid of my old tank, which was too small for my goldie (Jack) who is now 5 years old and 8-10cm (maybe slightly bigger than that).

He is now in a Hagen TropiQuarium 68 which, I believe is 80ltrs, on his own. My intention was always to have some companions for him, so my question is - what companions would be suitable for him?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I will be going down to Dobbies in Ayr on Thursday night to get something if I know what i'm getting :D

Cheers,
Picco

P.S. I'm also on Twitter: twitter.com/crmpicco ;)

are your goldfish fancy or common if you have common they really belong in a pond but if it is a fancy your tank is already fully stocked and you cant have any more fish with it the fancy goldfish get 10 inches long so your tank is already fully stocked it would be better if you could get a bigger tank though

For two fancy goldfish the minimum tsnk size is three foot/120l. As Fishy friend says, common goldies really need to be in a pond; they can easily grow to over a foot long.

You really need 90 litres at least if you want to keep two fancies, and I don't even know if you have a fancy! He's certainly going to love all that extra space but you shouldn't really get another.

Also, if you do choose to get another anyway since you're not far under having 20 gallons of water, please quarantine your newbie! Just get a plastic storage box and an extra filter, treat the water and put it in there for 4 weeks. Spend week 1 observing the fish for illnesses and funny activity, then treat for 3 weeks as required. Then you can put them together when you're sure newbie fish is healthy.

If you want to go for an easy care fancy I would suggest a fantail. Pretty simple little fish but pretty fins. Other fancies tend to be more specialist, for instance pearlscales which are notoriously hard to keep.

Hope that helps!
