can anyone suggest a unusual mid water fish for my community tank i have a 500l an would want something larger than neons for example!?

yeah i seen these an they are really colourful but maybe something a little bigger perhaps

The torpedo barb grows to 6 inches. pretty big imo. If you want something bigger you are looking at the larger cichlids and oddball type fish. Look at the black ghost knife fish. Some cichlid suggestions are green terror, oscar, flowerhorn. You will only be able to keep small numbers of this type of fish in one tank as they are aggressive and large. Large catfish are also an option. Piranha?

hey, yeah thanks for your thoughts i love some of those cichlids but i have a community tank with some small fish like neons i didnt think i could have them because they would eat some? is this right or are there exceptions?

what about german blue rams? i know they usually stay on the bottom of the tank but mine happily swim about mid tank and are very colourful, also peaceful, dont know if they will get to the size you want though

yeah quite like those just showed my gf tho she doesnt approve lol

Since your other half is making the deciding vote how about you go look in some books or google for some ideas then come back and see what people think for compatibility etc?

We could sit here for ever and throw random fish names at you and get "she doesnt approve" on all of them :)

Part of fish keeping is keeping what "you" want to keep not what other people think you should keep :)

i really liked them after finding out about them when some people on here suggested them. on the other hand my other half didnt like them when i showed him the pics on the net, however after taking him to a store and showing him them in real life he fell in love with them and we ended up with a pair. he managed to get some pics of ours (which at the tame hadnt fully coloured up due to the move), theyre at this link if you want to have a look http://www.fishforums.net/content/New-Worl.../New-Blue-Rams/

i do really like them might just buy them without her knowing, its too late when they are there right  roughly how much they go for?

Totally agree.. Excellent fish that swim around the whole tank, giving colour to that top half of the aquarium.. Nicely active fish, whose colouring seem to get better and better. They also live happily with Cardinals, Black Phantom Tetras and other community fish in my tank.

Very active, and like to be in a group. I only have 3, which i would say is a minimum!
