Hi all!

I am looking to start a coldwater 62-70 fahrenheit 20 gallon long tank. The decor will include black sand, driftwood, and some live plants. What species would be best suited to these conditions?

Thanks for the help :)

Hello :)
It partly depends on the length : is it a 24" by 12" by 16" or 30" by 12" by 12" ? I need to know cause some fishes are active/fast swimmers and need more length than others that are slow swimmers.
Do not forget you'll have to cycle your tank 4-5 weeks before adding inhabitants.

Will cycle for sure! The tank is 30” by 12” by 12”. Thanks for the reply

Depending on how cold it actually gets, you could do pepper cories, Corydoras paleatus, white cloud minnows, Florida Flag Fish if species only. I know paradise fish can do cooler waters, but am not sure if they would be okay in a 20 long. Hillstream loaches (not sure specific type) like fast flowing cold water. Some barb species like cool water.

All of these depend on your ph and gh, though.

Temp stays between 64 and 70 Fahrenheit with 62 being the absolute lowest possible. I can get all of my fish at my LFS in town(which i really like) who presumably uses the same town water I have so the fish I get should be fine in my Ph and Gh parameters. (Sorry cant get a test or find the numbers online at the moment :( )

You might go for Tanichthys albonubes, sp. ‘vietnam’and to a lesser extent micagemma. Not only a beautiful fish, Tanichthys is enough resilient to live in a pond.
If you like ‘barbs’ have a look to Pethia. Roughly each of them can fit your tank.
Keep in mind all these fishes are shoaling/schooling fishes that have to live in group of 8/10 at the most specimens and do best in species-tank. They need much plants including floating plants and driftwood roots or branches.

Would the odessa barb work (6-8)? Is this too cold for a BN pleco?

To me, too cold for Corydoras paleatus, Jordanella floridae.
Macropodus opercularis, alone, is ok in community tank.
I dunno for loaches.

Natives are awesome!

Fourspine Stickelbacks
Small kind of Darter
Rainwater Killifish
Pygmy Sunfish
Bluefin Killifish
Shiners (Emerald, Golden, Rainbow)
Flathead Minnows
Central Stoneroller
Florida Flagfish
Black stripe Topminnow
Mosquitofish
Crawfish

non-natives:

Platys
Guppies
Celestial Pearl Danios
Reticulated Hillstream Loach
Clown Killifish
Cherry Shrimp
Barbs (I have Rosy’s outside on my patio pond)
White Cloud Mountain Minnows
Croaking Tetra (may work based on water temp)
And if you want something special, Rhinogobius duospilus is a cool goby!

To me, BN Pleco, Platy, clown killifish = no. They need 23°C minimum.

Would a paradise fish be compatible with either some odessa barbs or WCMM?
I told you above : Macropodus opercularis ok community tank if alone of his species.
Odessa barb Pethia, yes.
WCMM Tanichthys, yes.
