i went to a lfs i have not been to before and as i put in my earlier post found my cokatoos.

the guy said that in my 4ft tank i could keep 2 pairs and that they would probably be alright alongside a coupel of pairs of rams??

now i really don;t think he was just trying to sell them to me as he went to great lenghts to explian the neccesary water conditions etc. when i asked about keeping 2 trios he said i could but pairs would be fine.

i now confsued as many people have told me so many differnet thigns about keepign cokatoos and rams etc, and also as to the number of cokatoos.

now fair enough he told me what i wanted to hear but i was preety pleased, as i was hoping to put a couple of pairs of cocaktoos and a few rams in my 'dream' amazon tank

please help guys

I prefer having more than one female for each male, but I have never had it any other way.
So do I ;) , I have had it the other way ......in a 70 gallon aquarium with all kinds of places for her to hide , and other fish  , eventually [ within 1 month , and after like 4 spawnings ] she died as a result of his constant advances . That was about a year ago .
I bought my pair because it's all they had at the shop . :/

Everything I've ever read suggests keeping several females per male ,believe it or not some shop owners don't know this .

2 months ago I was finally able to get him 2 mates , everything is fine .

If the male has nothing to distract him from just 1 female I'm afraid she may end up dead .

Some people may be able to say they had no such problems , I can only say from experience try and get at least 2 females . :)

Cockatoos are one of the least demanding of Apistos when it comes to water conditions , they won't tolerate ammonia or hi nitrates well , but most other fish won't either .

You know, I think that 2 females per male might be the best way to go......my male is really only interested in 2 out of the 3....Wait, now that I think about it, I'm sure he prefers one over the other, and just "Ranks" them. One's too big, another's too small, but the last is just right!!!

My male has a favorite as well , the more colorful [ more yellow  ]and more petite female ;) , but when she ditches him he'll go for the other . :) the pig :hey:

The genus Apistogramma breeds in a patriachal fashion, meaning that the dominant male laygs claim to a large territory in which there are several females. When breeding, the male fertilizes the egs of the females in his territory and leaves the care of them to the females, he is responsilbe for the defending the eggs in his territory.

If there is only the one female in the tank, with the one male, he will be aggresive towards her and constantly batter her to breed with him, however, with 2 - 3 females, his aggresion will be spread and no one female will be constantly harrased.

:)

ok thanx guys! he seemed really kowledgeable, and i suprised he didn't try and sell me three after all its business, there only priced up for a pair so suggestions on how to get a third.

as i say tnak is 4'x1'x1' would 2 trios be ok in there? and what about the rams?

I just have to say, I'm an VERY upset to see you have taken my Avatar pic and signed it as your own.

I bought that male Cacatuoides as a fry, raised it and spawned it with 2 different females on MANY occasions. I do NOT appreciate it being taken and used by someone else.

IF you had bothered to ask, I would have probably said go right ahead. However, since you did not, I have to consider it stealing. :/

I sent you a PM, but I would really appreciate you removing YOUR signature from MY picture, and completely removing the picture from your signature.

Thank you.

This is not the place for this. :grr: You have hijacked this thread with personal business, and I've PMd you (the proper way to respond) with my reply.

I'm sorry, One_Trick_Pony, for any problems this may have caused you.

So as to not "ruin" your getting a new answer: I would prefer only cockatoos in my tank...but that's just me. You would be okay with cockatoos and rams on an everyday basis. Not sure what will happen during breeding times, though.

On a side note: How do you like my new sig? ;) I know I didn't raise it from a fry, but you guys won't hang me for it will you?

just count yourself lucky not to know...

i vote for only two sets of breeding cichlids; either a trio and rams OR two trios.

no sense in any more aggression than necessary!
