That's the safe move. If the aquarium sand is too expensive (it is for me!) you can also use "play sand" from your local hardware or home store. Lots of people on here use that and it works fine.
 
I just came back from my local fish store, not petsmart a local store owned by one guy. And I noticed all his tanks including tanks with bottom feeders all the tanks are filled with black diamond coal slag, and he has n sells very healthy fish
 
It should be washed with dish soap to remove oil that is present, and ultra rinsed.

I have seen hobbyist using Black Diamond 20/40 to the 100 pounds. It can leach iron a little in the first weeks of utilization, but People report that it's not sharp and perfectly fine with bottom dwellers.
