Hi

I have a 300l tank with discus, gouramis, and loaches.

Water

Nirite = 0
Ammonia = 0
PH = 6.5
temp = 29 cel
Nitrate = <10ppm

The discus are doing really well. Eating well and growing. Swimming near the fron of tank mostly.

The Gouramis are generally at the top of tank near filter most of the time but will feedmost tof the time (not every time).

Anyway today the loaches were all dead on the botton of tank. In different places. No marks on body. They had been really active recently and a bit less active last day or two. But Still out at times and eating.

Any ideas why they might have died. The fact they ALL went on same day makes me think water or something in it.

The only thing I've been doing lately is adding water clarifier each couple of days to remove some cloudiness that keeps comong back. The LFS suggested that i use this approach as every other reading is fine so it must be an algae or bacteria bloom. Basically the Accu clear clears the water perfectly then over 2-3 days it starts to cloud up again.

I've also been adding some algae control that i've used for 6 months now.

The only other thing is as my KH was zero we have added some KH stabiity booster a weeka ago to help that and in trun keep PH more stable. It ws a bit up and down.

Funny thing was the fish all seemed fine when the PH was moving a bit.

My other question is regarding water testing...............Is it possible to have different readings from top of tank than if water sample taken from bottom. Now obviously think this is very unlikely. but thought i should ask.

Any ideas helpful.

Cheers

are you using bogwood/mopani, blackwater extract and/or peat to keep your water at 6.5pH?

sadly it is a little known fact that tannic acid is toxic to many fish from rivers that don't naturally have it . PFK has stated as much in Decembers edition

I have a big piece of drift wood in the tank. And I have bio chem zorb pouches to keep the tannin low

You may have added them a bit early, I found out the hard way around this with bottom feeders.
My 180 ltr has been set up about 3-4 months now, and the bottom feeders are now seeming to last.
Also the bogwood may have had an effect on them but not 100% sure.
As for stats being different from top to bottom, all I know is that ammonia and nitrite levels if present, are higher at the bottom of the tank than the top.

Thanks for that.

They were so healthy for the whole time so it is strange.

The gouramis are all staying at top corner behind the pump filter which is also strange.

Its hard when all the water readings seem perfect AND the seemingly tough to look after discuss are also going well?????

Cheers for the comments

What is your KH reading now? If it is 0 the pH could be swinging rapidly through the day. Have you tested pH at different times of the day/night?

Bottom feeders are defo a bit hit and miss at the beginning, especially clown loaches as they are a naked skin fish.
Cory's are that little bit hardier, especially if they are that bit bigger.
