Have had my percular tank bred clowns since june and they have been happy in my tank, however I am keen to find them something to host that is not a nem, i realise as they are tank bred there are no guarantees they will host anything but im keen to put something in they will be ok with.

I seem to remember reading somehere that there are much better options than nems for them to host, being that im not that keen on introducing a nem I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of what else would be good for them.

I'd recommend a Toadstool - much easier to keep than an anemone

depends on the toadstool and nem.

For example, aquacultured BTA nem vs Wild caught yellow fiji leather

there's also no real symbiosis between the clown and the leather. The clown could irritate the leather to death over time. While neither one recieves any real benefit. BTA would be much better, especially captive bred.

My Maroon clowns have been in the same Leather for 4 years now with no problems

To be honest a captive bred bubble tip fits that bill perfectly.

I personally am not really a fan of clowns hosting corals, even if the clown does not kill or severely irritate the coral, the clown doesn't receive any health benefits and can actually become more prone to disease by some accounts. If you must, the ones best suited are Cataphyllia, Euphyllia, and Sarcophyton. Xenia/Anthelia can work as well. Do realize that none are built to host clowns as a symbiotic anemone is.
Captive bred BTA's will do fine under a 150 watt halide or boosted fluorescents, that is, a generous amount of T-5 HO, T-12 VHO, or PC.

Your leather is dead, sorry I had to be the one to tell you. Clown musta killed it, tsk, tsk. :D
Just saying its possible for clowns to irritate corals and potentially damage them. Its worth noting.

Other common suggestoins are torch, frogspawn, or hammer corals

a final tip.... get the coral because you like the coral and you want it in your tank, dont get it for the clown. It will save you some disappointment if the clown doesnt take it.

Good point :good:

thanks guys
all i will say is that i was unsure what coral to look at next and thought if i could find something my clowns may take to then all the better, but saying that it wouldnt be just for my clowns it would be for me as well
