Cleanup Crew Recommendations Pls

nerite snails sound really cool, thanks!

Think i will get some of them and some shrimps for now! just want something to clean the ornaments and glass of the odd bit of algae

i dont want anything to eat poop lol i clean that off the sand myself every couple of days

i am currently feeding about half a hikari algae wafer broken into bits before bed for the bottom feeders and a tiny pinch of flake food in the morning for the middle and top layer fish

initially i fed twice a day just with flake, but they were all trailing poop twice the length of themselves all day long so i cut it right back lol

think ill get a clam aswell, they look really cool!

Don't get a clam or mussel mate; they can't live in tanks without very, very specialist care and will just die and pollute your water. Sorry!

Just an off topic comment, but the corys are not algae eaters so algae wafers are not their diet if that's what you mean by bottom feeders in your comment. I'd get them proper bottom feeder wafers that contain meat stuff as well. Hikari sinking wafers for bottom feeders(the orange pack) and also hikari has the mini wafers which the corys vacuum in seconds. They would appreciate some blood worms ones a week, go crazy for them, frozen ones are easy to buy and keep. They do eat the algae wafers but only this is not healthy for them. The food that falls from other fish is barely anything and not enough to supplement their diet.

As well as the nerite and golden apples, I have some red cherry shrimp and amano shrimp. I was a bit concerned that the amano's would attack the cherrys due to them being smaller, but no such problems.

My tank is spotless so I would recommend those. What sort of filter do you have?

if you are wanting a plec for the algae, dont get a clown. our clowns hide constantly (the female occasionally eats the algae off the glass but gets bored fast ad goes back under her bridge. the male just stays on his driftwood watching everyone else)

i've just invested in some nerite snails which are due to arrive on tuesday to keep a lid on our algae problem - the no breeding thing was a major plus :)

What type of clown is it? The clown plecos are not truly algae eaters. From the top of my head, the common pleco types, the bristlenose and butterfly pleco are algae eaters. The butterfly is sometimes called a clown pleco but there is another pleco called "clown pleco" which is not a true algae eater. Many people presume that if it is a pleco, it is an algae eater

Panaque Maccus i believe is their actual name, the actual clown pleco :) they are rubbish algae eaters, good job i like thier little eccentricities. They both occasionally suck on to the glass but just stay in one spot.

Thats odd, they have them in pets at home in bare tanks and they seem to be doing fine, also seen a lot of tanks on youtube with them in and they are doing fine, what sort of specialist care do you mean?

Yeah, they'll survive for a good few months before they die :/

They need a very, very high flow and extra, targeted feeding with the liquid stuff made for marine filter feeders, like tubeworms and anemones.

im sure the flow rate in my tank would be more than adequate, it's like the north sea up one end!

so can u tell me what food and how to feed them please?

i was under the impression molluscs were filter feeders that ate all manner of cr@p :/

nerites, apples, cherry and amano shrimp, that sounds groovy :)

my filter is a 1500lph with foam and boilogical filter, my tank honestly isnt algae rich, i just dont wanna clean the glass every couple of weeks lol

plus i want more things, but not more fish, my mix right now is pretty perfect

The good thing about the shrimps is that they have a low bio load so shouldn't really effect your tank too much. Get a good group of the shrimps though, at least 6 of the same species as you will see a lot more of them in the tank, rather than them hiding away under a rock.

The snails should keep your glass spotless. I havent realy noticed the extra "poop" from the nerites, so as long as your filter is good, I assume you should be OK.

Also, I like your star wars themed tank.....as a fan myself!! (you added a zoomed out picy on another thread!!)

Ah, now you're going beyond my knowledge I'm afraid!

Clams and mussels are filter feeders that need prodigious amounts of 'crap' in the water, which just doesn't happen in a tank situation. You'd need to look in your LFS for the right kind of food and squirt it to them with a syringe, probably every day or it'll starve.

I really wouldn't try it, but it's your tank!

Thanks a lot Alistairw! Here is one i just snapped hehe
