Cichlid Tank Stocking Ideas

A 'peaceful cichlid' isn't the same as a peaceful community fish. Cichlids are almost exclusively semi-aggressive in their nature, even the more placid ones. A peaceful cichlid is basically the least aggressive of the cichlids.

if you can, get hold of firemouths less aggresive nicely coloured cousin Thorichthys Ellioti
but yes ive kept those species together without any problems, im really interested in how this tank developes keep us updated =D

firemouths are cool fish , maybee some rainbow cichlids to keep in with the central american theme.

convicts or cubans if your up for a more agressive challenge

I'm tempted to go with:

2x Angel Fish
4x Red Irian Rainbow Fish
1x Blue Acara
1x Synodontis Angelicus

What do you think would it work?

I think this is possibly just a little overstocked, if there is any potential for more fish in there please let me know. The angelicus is already downstairs in my 55gal community tank and doing well but I have another in there which is getting big so they need to be separated really.

Sounds fine to me, little over and those rainbows might prefer slightly more swimming room but should be fine.

Potentially I could take out the red Irian rainbow's and use that space for something else like a Severum maybe?

So I would have:

2x Angel Fish
1x Blue Acara
1x Severum or something else
1x Angelicus Catfish

Tanks is too small for a severum, they need 50g tanks really.

Should be ok with one convict, dont get anymore if they breed, all hell will break loose in the tank, convicts are nasty when they breed, just ask Shelagh, who had a quivering wreck of on Oscar when the convicts in his tank bred .

Crazy stuff so I have decided that my final stocking will be:

2x Angel Fish
1x Convict or Firemouth
1x Blue Acara
1x Synodontis Angelicus Catfish

I will let you all know how I get on with this I have not really kept cichlids before, I mean I have a bolivian ram in my community tank but thats about it.

Ultimately I would like the tank to be planted with a piece of wood and plenty of open swimming space. Are these guys likely to rip the plants to shreds?

Provided they are well rooted you should be ok. They wont eat them I dont think (?) but will pull them up.

If its a choice between a convict and a firemouth, I vote firemouth
