I just rehomed my Cherry community from a 10 to 30gal tank. While moving them i noticed one large female had a light whitish-pink stripe running from head to tail. It's not the usual ovary patch but a solid strip. She's active, eating well, and swimming. What could it be and why is she the only one that has it?

The 'go faster' stripe on the back of female RCS is common. I think it has something to do with the colourform of wild shrimp, either RCS or a mix of RCS and some other closely related species.

If I knew what caused it, I'd try and breed selectively for it. A bright red shrimp with a distinct stripe is kind of cool. :)

Why is it called a "go faster" stripe? Do you have a website that talks about this? I haven't seen this term before.

PMSL...The term go faster strip is an old nickname used in the UK for the cars that have a stripe down the headlight to tailight.

In the seventies and eighties it was common place for the manufacturers to 'sport up' the look of their cars with a stripe down the side. Think of the Ford Escort MkI the sterotypical image of those models is the large wide strip down the side!!

In the eighties almost every car that came out had a pinstripe or 2 down the side (normally in gold)

So the 'go faster stripe' is nothing to do with shrimp. lol Its just a similie that the poster has used to describe the stripe on the shrimp.

I'm all the way across the pond and people here also use the term "go fast(er) stripe". One or two other females also seem to be develoing the stripe. Looks pretty neat, since the move there color has deepened a lot and they are a very bright red.

I always called them racing stripes. Never heard them called "go faster stripes" but then I haven't fooled with "race" cars in a while either.

I did a Google on "go faster stripes" and found wikipedia's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go-faster_stripes explanation which points towards a British Newspaper, The Daily Mirror, and the comic strip, The Perishers, as the likely source of the term "go faster stripes".

Leave it to someone to come up with "go slower stripes", http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/go-slower_20stripes, and how they would work.
