Hey guys,

So there are now over 100 cherry shrimp in my 10gl shrimp tank. about 30 or so are still very small but there are at least 3 berried females right now and 20 or so saddled females. In a very short time I will have too many shrimp for this tank. My 29gl community tank has a DG and 2 macrobrachium shrimps that I know would kill the RCS if I put some of them in there.

I was thinking of getting a fish or 2 to put in the tank to help control the population. I don't want fish that will eat all of them or decimate the population but control the population. Does anyone know of any fish that would do that?  Does that sound cruel or wrong? I think it would be more wrong to allow the population to get too big for the tank and then most if not all the shrimp would die. Right now I also have 3 endler guppies in the tank.

I can't get another tank ATM but does anyone have any other ideas?

Hello,

RCS do tend to breed like crazy so your not alone with your problem, have you thought about donating some to a local fish store? they may even give you some store credit for the shrimp.

Or you could donate them to other fish keepers if you know of any.

Have you considered taking them to the fish shop for some store credit?

Cherry shrimps won't give you much, but it's better than getting a fish to control the population, also because 10 gallons leaves you with very little options fish-wise...

Since your population of shrimp seems stable you could perhaps look at getting some Dario Dario better known as scarlet Badis, these guys are small and should only really tackle shrimplets. This way hopefully the adult shrimp will not be bothered while still producing more food for the scarlet badis, and any youngsters that do survive then join your population to keep it ticking over.

I would also consider taking some of your shrimp to a local pet shop/ FS, and see if they can/ will sell them. You should be able to ask at least 50cents (50p) per shrimp. If doing this be sure to not take so many that your population suffers and I would try to ensure you only off load the lower grade shrimp, to keep Improving your own stocks. Keep in mind that cherry shrimp tend to get better with age too, so just be sure that the ones you don't want aren't too young and just not showing their full potential yet.

Thanks guys. I will look into taking them to the LFS. I don't think they will buy them but I would be willing to give them to them.

But I really like the badis idea. They are cool looking fish. Would they be okay with the endlers? How many scarlet badis should I get? Are they better in schools or are 2 or 3 ok?
