Woot I got a betta today as well I'm trying to get pics but they are hard to photograph
Also she is looking amazing I'm so happy the color is returning :)

George is getting more beautiful by the day. Every time I think he's gotten all the color he's going to get, he goes and pops a bit more red, or blue, or yellow. He's far more magnificent than even when I first saw him, and such an easy keeper! All my other bettas are super picky about what he eats, he begs for everything, and he all but waves pom poms when he sees food. ANY food. He's such a character. Check out these photos from today:

I'm hopelessly in love with him. He's so interactive and joyous. Who knew so much personality was locked away in that little petsmart cup?

I think I'm going to get him a longer tank with some more stuff in it. Any ideas on what he might like?He won't go into the log, but he practically camps on top of it all day long. I want to make him the most perfect playground ever. I saw a 20 gallon breeder that looks like it'd give him tons of places to explore. Just have to figure out a place in my house long enough to put it.

No hubby...we didn't need all that counter space! Really!

Just found a proper fish tank on a shelf in my garage. I think is a 5 gallon, not really sure, but it's a heck of a lot bigger than that cup. Found a sponge filter, currently prowling about for something that will work as a lid. ^^ Any ideas on what would work as a cover? It's pretty much the shape of a 5 gallon bucket, but hexagon and clear.

He's actually regained a bit of color already, and ate bloodworms quite greedily.
I use glass place mats as covers, and then others are what Wildbetta said.

Well done, he has come on a treat for you

You must be so proud of yourself and him.

Firstly, I would remove the marbles at the bottom of his tank.  I had a Betta boy with those at the bottom, then I read somewhere on here that someone had them and they leaked a liquid from the centre and killed their fish.  I am not sure if they were different but was not prepared to take a risk.

I would not get him too large an aquarium as I have read that some Bettas do not fair so well in the very large aquariums.  I guess if they have been used to such a small environment since being bred they can feel lost

That said, I would always have them in 5 gallons plus and not the small containers/vases that are on offer!

I would get some live plants for him and include some floating plants.  Get something like an Amazon Sword plant that will reach to the surface as they love to sleep in these.  Also, get him some IAL's and some bogwoood as these help to keep the water as he would like it.

to George and may he continue to surprise you with his colours.

Can you tell us, did the store give him to you when you confronted them?

Not sure if you have seen this re: location, if you could action it that would be great in respect to future assistance, plus anyone else without a location

EDIT: He looks a little like my boy, who has indeed grown into a little stunner.

Love his color!!  He is really improving quickly!  I agree with RCA -- I would remove the marbles just because they do not always work out correctly in fish tanks.  I have heard of them leaching stuff into the water and they also allow a lot of waste to settle in between them and under them which makes keeping the tank clean harder. I recommend sand or gravel although with bettas, it is perfectly fine to keep a bare bottom if you so choose.   I do not agree with RCA about the tank size recommendation however.  My rule of thumb is the bigger the better.  There are very few cases of bettas having issues with larger tanks and most of those can have their stress lessened with clear areas to mark as boundaries for their territory.  I think you have done a great job with him.  :D

How scary They came with the tank or I wouldn't have added them. I'll pull them out right away.

As for the store: Company policy is that they can't sell a sick animal---only adopt it out. You have to sign a little paper saying you won't try and return the fish and get your money back if it dies (since you're not paying anything you'd basically be stealing the money) and promise to take good care of it. I learned this a few months ago when the manager asked me to take a betta with a cyst on its gill. I asked them to adopt George out to me, and made a big stink until I got my fish.

The regular manager of the fish store is a very caring, knowledgeable fish person. I can't imagine how George slipped by her, and that's part of why I was so upset. I've come to expect a lot more from this particular store. I've never seen any disease in the main tanks, and they made in my opinion, a big monetary sacrifice for the welfare of the goldfish, and stopped selling them for two days because there was an issue with the water and the fish were stressed.

I'm going to go back in with pictures of the improvement and speak with the regular manager in a few days.

Good for you! I'm very happy to see your betta is doing so well. I'm sure we can all agree you were the best thing that's ever happened to George :)

That's where George is for the next 48 hours. >.<

I realize it's not ideal, but its 3 times as big as that cup and at least I can put him in the fish room, which is temperature controlled.

Hopefully I'll be sharing picks of him toddling around a new 5 or 10 gallon on Friday.
