That awkward situation where you know you shouldn't, but you really don't have a choice. Yah.

Everyone, please meet George:

Two weeks ago, George was a splendid yellow and sky blue plakat dragonscale. I know this because he was such a looker, I almost bought him then, but the dragonscales are really expensive at Petsmart, and I'm already so busy with the tanks that I have...really don't need another betta.

This week, there he was again. Only now he looks like that. They'd had a sale, and poor sad thing, he was the only betta left.

I spoke to management, cause I was really angry and sad that he ended up looking like this, and long story short I ended up taking him home. Unfortunately, am not going to have enough money to get a new tank until Friday.

So...

That's where George is for the next 48 hours. >.<

I realize it's not ideal, but its 3 times as big as that cup and at least I can put him in the fish room, which is temperature controlled.

Hopefully I'll be sharing picks of him toddling around a new 5 or 10 gallon on Friday. :)

Just found a proper fish tank on a shelf in my garage. I think is a 5 gallon, not really sure, but it's a heck of a lot bigger than that cup. Found a sponge filter, currently prowling about for something that will work as a lid. ^^ Any ideas on what would work as a cover? It's pretty much the shape of a 5 gallon bucket, but hexagon and clear.

He's actually regained a bit of color already, and ate bloodworms quite greedily.

Excellent news! How about just some plastic wrap for the time being until you can find a proper lid?

Glad you saved him!
Can't wait to see pics of him in his new tank and when he's healthier. :)

What she said. :D

Keeping a betta in a smaller container like you had for a day or two would not have been very bad as long as you could heat it and keep it very clean.  I am glad to hear that you were able to find something more suitable though for him.  I use pieces of plexiglass, plastic wrap, and pieces of craft mesh for lids in a pinch.

Poor guy!  I am glad that you were able to get him and I look forward to seeing him in better condition.  :D

Here's a pic of George from above with an actual speck of color!!

He is still clamping his fins, but not quite as tightly. I'll try to get a side view that's not horribly blurry. The 5 gallon hex was too tall for him to swim to the surface easily, he seems really sick even with the better color. I improvised with a large storage tub thats extremely long but shallow. He only has to go up about 5 inches to get air, but he's got two feet of swimming room. I put repticord under the bottom to warm it a little bit more than the room. It's holding steady a 82 degrees, but i'm checking every hour or so since I don't know how this will work.

Here's a pic of him in the new environment:

Well George is definetly looking healthier then before, glad to see color is beginning to show up again. I'm sure he will be swimming around happily in no time! I'm glad you saved him he needed a good home :)

Poor little Betta! I just about cried reading your words here! Looking forward to a success story, and lots of pics!

If you should need to, feel free to add a small 25-50 watt heater to keep his water steady.  I have never had any heaters malfunction and burn up the storage totes yet.   It is good to see him showing color now.  :)

Good to know. I've got a drawer full of heaters, I'm sure one of them is low watt.

I'm almost certain this little guy is going to make it now. Every time I take out the pellet container to feed the other fish, he goes wild at the front of the tub begging shamelessly. I've never had a betta go through such a big dance over pellets. (Especially considering how many he left in his cup uneaten!)

I can't wait till he's behind clear glass I can actually see through!! YAY!!

Wow even in that pic you can start seeing drastic improvement ! Your doing great keep up the excellent work and +1 on a low watt heater
