I am trying to find lino for my fishroom floor - its only 4 ft by 4.5m in size, but the lino is really quite expensive!

Anybody got any smart cheap ideas? I just want to put something down that will make water spills easy to mop up

find a local flooring contractor, call and see if they have any off cuts.

Have you tried Freecycle?
I've seen lots of offcuts going in my area so you might be lucky in yours

I have in the past asked shops etc but the offcuts are normally so small and no use - i would need to seal the joints etc.

I have had a look on gumtree and the like but people want so much money for next to nothing! Typical! Its actually cheaper to buy new in a lot of cases!

But, new is still expensive even at £3.90 a m2.

Not heard of freecycle before....i'll have a look.

You used to be able to buy 'lino in a tin'. Painted it on with a brush. If you can find it it would seal a concrete floor perfectly for your purposes.

I have a wooden chip board floor though! haha.

I looked up if there was a waterproof paint for that, but not had any luck finding anything! ebay has lino at £3 a square meter....but they only do it in 3m wide lengths which means mass wastage!

Not had any luck on gumtree or anything local :(

Our local 'pound shop' (and which variation depending on where you live in the UK) sell 4 x 12 inch by 12 inch self adhesive lino tiling pieces for £2. I wouldn't have them in the bathroom (EDIT; Mrs Apple wouldn't have them) but they do a fantastic job out in my shed....great for safety and sound proofing, yet still comfortable. So what does that work out? About £2-3 per square metre?

a pound shop can't sell at item for £2! haha.

I did think/ look at them. How do you find them for sealing? I.e. does the water not just go in-between the tiles at get to the floor?

Not if they were sealed properly, at a guess. There isn't any water spillage within my shed, but i would say a decent floor sealent inbetween the gaps would suffice quite nicely. Their self adhesive is very strong (they cling to my off-cuts of laminate flooring superbly), so properly done would create an excellent seal.
Heh-heh-heh..this is one of your 'upmarkey' pound stores y'know..they sell reading specs and everything :hey: .

+1 on those pound shop tiles. Got them in my kitchen if u line them up properly u shouldn't need to seal them we've got no problems with ours and it cost us 12 quid to do the whole kitchen lol

You can paint chipboard with floor paint, generally best to seal it first though. A coat of sealant then a coat of garage floor paint would do it, but floor paint isn't all that cheap.

And pound land was the answer! £14 and the whole floor will be covered :)

Now to finish the rest of the room and then progress will start flying!

May our lord bless the Pound Stores and all that sail in her...

Gotta love pound stores you can get anything & everything.
I reseeeded my lawn for £20 last year, would've cost a fortune in a garden store.
Glad you got your flooring sorted Rorie
