Channel Catfish+Gold Fish+Guppies

I looked it up and i believe that I have a "Ictalurus punctatus" there the ones you see normaly in pet store that are white skined right?

well I have always heard of the rule that you can have a inch of fish per gallon. do u not believe in that?

The " per gallon isnt a great rule if im honest. That is also not what it means, It works more like in a 10G you could have 10 1" fish not you could have 1 10" fish if that makes sense. The other thing is a 10" fish is likely to make more mess than 10 1" fish because its likely to be alot deeper and wider bodied. The 1" per gallon rule can work ok with small fish below 6" really but once you start talking 12"+ aslong as there not extremely active the best rule is the length of than is 4 times the fishes length and the width and height of the tank 2 times the fishes length so a 24" fish would need a 8x4x4' tank which is about 1000G not a 24G tank like the 1" per gallon rule would say.

nope the inch per gallon is wrong

if that was right i could have 3 and a half great white sharks in my 9ft tank

can you believe it that my local pet store is trying to sell 2 baby wels catfish... why in the world would you ever purchest something like that..

If i had the room they would be the first fish in the tank but i would need to convert my house into a tank to have room for them monsters. Its shame fish like that end up in lfs because its pretty much guaranteed a c*** life unless someone with a 32x16x16 foot aquarium or bigger finds them.

tbh many would say the same about channel cats as you need a pond with no fish in it but wels catfish take it a step further

Lol a Wels would require a lake not a pond and god the feeding bills for it would be huge unless you had a population of grass carp in there that it hunted. Channels are largely unsuitable for the average home keeper and the inch per gallon rule only applies with small species of fish that do not have any other requirements listed when your dealing with large preds or any large fish (5+inches) then it no longer applies and special considerations need to be made. You could have a 2 foot wide, 1 foot deep corner tank that goes floor to ceiling 7 foot tall and it would not be suitable for the majority of large fish even though you have plenty of gallons.

That actually sparked me thinking it would be awesome to do a mangrove paludarium project like that with all the roots all twisted in the water and a tree literally growing in the corner of your living room with some reptiles and amphibs living in the tree above.

haha guppies and goldfish breading? That would be interesting maybe I could sell them to a pet store. Add some deformed fish to thier collection.

The two won't cross breed but I did have both populations breeding in my pond and I did sell them to the LFS but catching teenage (2-3") goldfish in an established planted pond is a bit of a time consuming task.

so my tank that is 4x2x1 would not work? for a cat that gets to be 2 feet? people were telling me to keep a 2 foot fish you would need a tank 4 times it length for tank length and 2 times length for wdth and 2 times for high. so a tank of 8x4x4
thats a hugh tank.. concidering that 1 cubic foot= 7.5gallons and that would make out to 960gallons for 1 fish... :/
PS thanks for all comments you guys are teaching me alot! :)

yeah its like you standing in a room the exact width of you compared to one double the with (a corridor almost)
so if you wanted to keep him id put him in a 8x4x4 pond and stock the tank with smaller more suitable fish

I can't see anyone say that its just for one fish they say it is the minimum size for that fish to turn around and live happily not that you can't put more large fish in that tank with it providing they are suitable which fancy goldfish and guppies aren't. That is also the rule of thumb however with proper research you can find out which aspects are more important. I am currently planning a tropical pond which is 7ft x 3.3ft x 1.5ft (LxWxH) I plan to stock it with:

2 marbled motoro sting rays (1.5ft disk) (more important width then height)
1 silver arowana (wild size 4ft / captive size 2-3ft) (length and width important)( probably need to rehome when he gets too big or eat him   a major benefit to the constant expense of big fish pets)
1 Lima shovelnose cat (wild size 2.5ft / captive size 1.5-2ft) (length and width important)
1 Clown Knifefish (Wild size 3.5ft / captive size 1.5-2ft) (length and width important)

So I have 215 Uk gallons which means 215 inches of fish so following max captive sizes I have 18+24+36+24+24=126 215-126 = great I still have room for a 7.5ft fish I am think an irridescent shark or a wels catfish. So 5 fish in 1000L and it should be beautiful for 25 years or about 10 years then I will need to remove the arrowana and sell him for a fortune and the rest will continue on for another 10+ years.
