Hello,
I wanted to know if guppies, goldfish and channel cat can mix if I keep water at 70 degrees.
Its a planted tank. not co2 injected.
tank size: 55 gallons+two filters
lion head goldfish:2
koi: 1 "will be put into a pond soon"
number of channel cats: 1
guppies: 0 "have not got them yet"
I know the cat will eat baby guppies but I want to use guppies as feeders anyways. Also I read that
channel cats like temps 70-85 and goldfish like 70- so I WAS THINKING that 70 degrees would be a good
temp for them to live healthy lives... I attempted to keep water at 75 degrees but my lions heads seem
to breath faster and dont like it so I stettled with 70.
ALL comments help and will be appreciated.
plus any comments on what I currently have in the tank will be nice.
:)
THANK YOU!

your guppies wouldn;t get to breed with a predator like the channel cat it would devour them in days if not one night

having kept one as a youth the growth rate is tremendous as well and it wouldn;t be long till it outgrows your tank

Channel cats are suitable tankmates provided you have a fish tank 6+foot long 2+ foot wide. Guppies would get nailed as soon as they touched the water. Guppies with goldfish I have done and it worked well however its something to be very wary of as goldfish should predate on guppies.

yeah true. he's only about 4-5 inches right now and iv had him for like 5 months. If all else fails I'll keep him in the tank by himself. 55 gallon tank for one fish I think is ok, lots of air stones and 2 filters. :) Also i was going to get the guppies now while catfish is still smaller and let them breed and maybe they will populate enought to keep a few in there. lol always wanted a large cat in a tank think it looks kinda cool. specialy since I'v had him since a baby.
also have a pond to throw him in if he gets tooo big.

haha guppies and goldfish breading? That would be interesting maybe I could sell them to a pet store. Add some deformed fish to thier collection. hahaha. Also the catfish is only about 4-5 inches, you think that he would eat a full size guppy at his current size?
Did it ever happen to you? or just think it could be possibility? :hyper:

o yeah.. also do you think that the temp of 70 degrees is suitable for all the breeds?

the cat will grow quicker in warmer wwater

I don;t think Saltnay said the guppies and goldfish would breed he said predate (eat) lol

Your 55 gallon tank would not be big enough for long, if you put your cat in your pond I hope you don;t value any fish you have in their too much as it will eat them when big enough! :good:

probably dont want to keep the water too warm then if he will outgrow my tank fast.
ahh lol read to fast thought it said pregnate.
how long would you predict the cat to outgrow that tank at 70 degrees?
And the pond has no fish in it currently its kinda of a light brown color think it could live in there? has lots of frogs I guess it could eat.

70f is actually at the higher end of there temperature reange they will do fine down to 50f.

o ok. It's just I read a fourm that said they grow faster in 70-85 temps so i just assumed that, that is the required tempature for them to live healthy lifes.

your right thanks!
Intersting on there it says that "albino channel cats" reach a size of 27.6 inches Which is like 2 feet. people keep telling me that its goign to outgrow my tank. But on there thats a acceptable size for a 55 gallon tank. Do albinos run smaller then the gray catfish?

Theres 2 types of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus which get 27.6" and Ictalurus furcatus which get 65". Do you know which one you have? What colour is it.
A 27" fish is in now way acceptable for a 55G it would even be able to turn round. A rough rule is the length of the tank should be 4 times the length of the fish and the height and width should be 2 times the length of the fish so for a 27" you would be looking at atleast a 8x4x4 foot fish tank which works out at almost 1000 US G.

well the one I have looks very simulare to the white catfish that are on that website. But a difference between two albino catfish I would need some trates to try and figure witch one I have. I BELIEVE its the one that says 27 inches.
