Changing Tank Stand Colour, Tips Please

Well to update, I went out and got some sandpaper and some ronseal varnish in walnut (the colour I wanted).

I decided to do a test on a shelf from the juwel in beech I already have.

Its a no go. I sanded the shelf and put on a few coats of the varnish - it looked bloody awful.

As it turns out, when I got the tank, it was a 240 not a 300, so ended up going in the kitchen anyway and so it doesnt matter that its beech as the 300 I have is beech and doesnt need to match my lounge furniture
