Ceramic Bio Rings - 1L Or 1Kg?!

I don't think there is any need to worry about pre filter rings, water flow around any type of bio media will be adequately disturbed through the media basket and around the media itself as well as any pre filter mechanical pads. can only advise from my own experience with my shamefully overstocked tank and filter is doing a splendtastic job of keeping all the nasties in check

I wish the quality of a fish stores website was consider. Tyne Valleys is one of the worst I have ever seen.

I did see a make shift filter housing out of plastic bottles where he stuck K1 into and an air stone to move the water around more vigrously, but he had small fry in there aswell I could make a bed filter and link it into the main filter but thats custom jobbie.

dgwebster I've seen really good websites and really bad places of business and vice versa its like if the LFS is good they don't even need to advertise too much as there main customers are always in store.
I went to Pets4homes the other day with the kids to see rabbits and the chap had a wealth of knowledge in the fish section, he disagreed with the signs of sticking fish in after three days, but he said company policy for those signs, but he always states to them be prepared to do lost of water changes. So  there is always workers with work ethics in mind.

I generally find with LFS websites that if its primary business is equipment, its website will be fantastic as it tries to tap into the internet money stream. The LFS that provides live stock tend not to have a good website as they are traditionally local business based owners from pre-interwebbing and don't seem to appreciate the twenty somethings that love to browse online then come in, do business and leave with maximum efficiency. Funny thing is, I would pay a up to a few pounds more (including postage costs) for equipment from a lfs IF I knew it was instock, available now for said price.

Both of my lfs have extremely poor websites and so I frequently purchase hardware goods in advance from internet friendly stores instead. This stops me from entering the shop, seeing some beautiful livestock and informing my friends of it. On my benefit side, I have saved money and not wasted my precious time with a pointless visit to the store.

Edit: forgot to mention, both stores use computer based tills, these can easily be connected to an internet store to maintain stock availability.

I can't find any surface area information about Superfish CrystalMax either.  Aquaessentials claim it is 'the most effective biological filter media' and 'With Superfish Crystal Max you achieve the best performance per litre of filter volume!"  I'd prefer to see some figures to back that up.  I might contact them and ask!

I got back some very vague responses from AquaEssentials.  They claim it's the manufacturer (Superfish) who claim that the product is the 'best' but AE have no idea what these claims are based on.

I find it very strange that a supplier can advertise products on its website as 'the best performance' and 'most effective' without knowing or caring if those claims have any basis in truth.

I wonder from a legal standpoint who would be culpable if that product was proved to be falsely advertised - the supplier or the manufacturer?

I use aquamanta biostar in my fluvial 306, seems pretty good. One box 520g completely fills one of the media trays. It 'looks' better than the fluval stuff so I'm going to gradually fill all 3 trays with it.

It is very common for sellers to simply reiterate what the supplier has claimed, they are only informing you of what the supplier has told them and I don't see a problem with that. Would you repeat that Michael Jackson has died without carrying out your own post mortem?

Even the manufacturers data on something like this will be extrapolated information and not actual as each piece will be individual and have varying surface area available. No doubt stock data (x squared for every x cubed surface area) has been used to calculated the average amount and if it is sufficient enough to label it "best" it would be accepted by a code of advertising/product description ethics (e.g. if a cistern tank of average used 25% less water per flush than the nearest competitor average, this is sufficient to say its the best.)

Sometimes Daize knowledge can be a dangerous thing? LOL!
