Caught Some New Things Today...

i just caught 3 more pumpkinseed perch... gave them to a buddy..

and i caught another shiner, another big tadpole, and a eird fish with orange fins and an orange tail...

the orange-silver fish and the shiner were the only ones i added to my tank.. i gave my g/f the tadpole to put in her fish tank...

the pumpkin seeds are gamefish at least under regulations in new jersey and they are related to sunfish. i dont think it is illegal unless they are endangered which they are not, i just hope the tank is big enough because those pumpkin seeds can get to a good 10 inches.

Arnt perch a game fish in texas?

Seems like they are in other states and I saw in an other forum and the wildlife list as they say isnt complete since it only lists the minimal length ones.

Also you said you caught them with a net and if the perch was caught that way and is a game fish then that is illegal according to the texas ministry wildlife site.

Im assuming you used a cast net.

Also the texas shiners are you sure they are those since I looked at a couple and there was a couple on the threatened list that look very similar.

That list found here.

Yep, those are shiners.
If it looks like two species and one is endangered, then it's probably the other ;)

from the link you gave me, i got this list:

Game Fish (includes hybrids or subspecies of fish on this list):

Bass: Guadalupe, largemouth, smallmouth,
spotted, striped, white, yellow
Catfish: blue, channel, flathead
Cobia
Crappie: black, white
Mackerel: king, Spanish
Marlin: blue, white
Pickerel
Red drum
Sailfish
Sauger
Seatrout, spotted
Sharks
Snook
Spearfish, longbill
Swordfish, broadbill
Tarpon
Trout: brown, rainbow
Wahoo
Walleye

i don't see perch on the list...

Isnt the pumkinseed perch a subspecies of the walleye since walleye is a perch.

"Walleye, the largest members of the perch family, often exceed 20 inches in length. Although not as widely distributed as yellow perch, walleye are found in every major watershed in New York State, except Long Island. They are important gamefish and provide major recreational fisheries in lakes Erie, Oneida, Chautauqua, and Champlain.

"

Also like I stated before not all teh fish are listed.

That is proven in the post you made where it says

"includes hybrids or subspecies of fish on this list"

Im in canada though and we consider it a game fish and I talked to a few of my friends down in the states and they said most perch are consider game fish too.

Neat fish :)
So you take them straight out of their natural habitat and place them in your tanks? Wouldn't it kill them? The water chemistry would be way different then in the lake.

Perch are definitely a game species in Texas. The game wardens at a nearby lake have checked to make sure the ones we caught were regulation length on many an occasion.

Knowing Texas, catching them with a dip net to keep in your tank probably isn't illegal.

"Dip Net:
A mesh bag suspended from a frame attached to a handle.
May be used to take NONGAME fish only.
May be used to aid in the landing of fish caught on other legal devices.
In SALT WATER, nongame fish may be taken for bait purposes only.
"

from the link i gave earlier

No idea why I said cast net earleir lol. I meant the one with the pole and loop which is a dip net which if you catch non game fish is illegal in texas.

So that means if those fish as stated above are game fish then what he has done is illegal.

lol

Poor fish.

:dunno: game fish=fried fish dinner.

i think they should count themselves lucky :p

that Musk Turtle of yours is absolutely ADORABLE btw... has it decided you're edible yet? my bf has a red-ear slider that is completely convinced that i'm food. every time i look at him, he tries to dig through the glass to eat me! it's so funny watching those little claws shake in front of his nose. then if i put my finger on the glass, he gets all huffy and blows bubbles at me

turtles rawk.

i don't know why you are saying "poor fish"...

i take them out of a polluted culvert of a creek and bring them to my nice, clean, filtered, well fed tank...

my tank is not over-stocked, as i have given the larger fish to my friend with a 100+ gallon tank.

what's the difference between me catching a few fish in a creek, and you guys going out and buying fish that are raised on farms or pulled from their ocean homes?

i take good care of my fish...

and as far as going from creek to aquarium... they are very hardy fish and i haven't had one die yet. i have some of the perch in their for about a month.

i have a baby pumpkinseed that has been growing and my turtles are doing very well...

i like that my aquarium consists of native fish... i can't wait til i am older and have a huge wall aquarium full of native fish and turtles...
