I so wish i had a HUGE tank!!

was in my lfs and saw 2 gorgeous fish - a tiger shovelnose catfish and a fish called a south american aliminium catfish - although on the website i think it was called a shark catfish??

i thought instead of buying them i would come home and research them a little and as far as i can tell they are going to grow too big for my tank :( and the shark one is preditary?

i wish i had a huge tank that would be big enough for these two fish and my red tail catfish.

lol oh well it will be my birthday soon......dropping hints for a HUGE tank lol :hyper:

all those fish are predatory. and if the shark catfish is the one im thinking of then it needs to be in brackish water. the TSN and RTC would make great mates though if kept in a large enough pond.

All those fish get way too big and will eat anything that is smaller than them. The Red Tail you have now will outgrow you tank in no time. What size tank do you him in now?

How can you say it will outgrow it if you don't the size it's in now...... yes it's probably too small but how are you sure?

Because these fish grow up to 5 feet long. Unless you have him in an olympic sized swimming pool, I'd say he'll outgrow whatever size tank he's in now.

They grow past 5' they used to (in the wild) get several feet more than 5.

Still you shouldn't jump to conclusions, I was just saying.

I understand. I was trying to make a point. The redtail gets too big for home aquaria and she's thinking of getting a tiger shovelnose (can grow over 4 feet) and another large fish. I think she's well over her head with the redtail alone.

I would know because I have a redtail now. I took it in after my cousin (who knows nothing about fish) bought it for his 65 gallon. It ate a bunch of his fish and he threatened to flush it. I saved it and put it in my 150 gallon. Since then it has eaten a bunch of my fish, tried to eat others, and has swallowed tank ornaments. I don't want to give it to a pet store because In know they'll just stick it in an even smaller tank.

A store near me has a 2.5 foot redtail in a 125 gallon. The thing can barely move and just sits there looking very sad. These fish belong in the amazon river and only the amazon river.

actually if you read my post properly i put.....I saw some nice fish in the lfs, i went home to research them and found out how big the grow. and i said I wish i had a huge tank!

what part of that is thinking of getting them??

And i thought i was good to research before i got them!!

before you say im way over my head please read properly! and i got a rtc off my friend. what do you want me to do with him? give him to a pet shop so they can sell him to someone who doesnt know anything about fish? at least i have this website to ask questions! yes i know he will grow out of my tank but im going to make sure he goes somewhere nice.

So anyway back to the origional post.......they are gorgeous fish and i sooo wish i could have a massive tank for them.

I know. I don't want to give mine away to a pet shop either. They will just house him in an even smaller tank and he'll have an even worse off life.

All I was trying to say is that the red tail will be a huge hassle for you in the future. Just wait until he grows to over 2 feet. Buying more giant fish will not help your situation.

Sorry if I wasn't clear or sounded mean.

so after researching these catfish you cant house you went out and got a tiger shovelnose to go with your rtc

I was following the whole thread until you posted that Cane now Im really really confused GOOD ON YA :p and Carina I would recommend ringing all the aquariums you can get to and ask them about housing a rtc and ask them if they will take it and their selling policies of RTC's. I just got rid of a Jaguar Cichlid after ringing 8 aquariums and it's gone to a aquarium which the women who took it in owned one prior and will only sell it to a decent owner.

Theres a fish shop called Wharf Aquatics, in Nottinghamshire, who have a 1500 gallon tank. They allready have at least one RTC there, so maybe you could ask them to take yours off you?
