Ive just come home to find two Platy’s (one female adult and one female baby) in my boyfriends tank missing an eye each, and I haven’t got a clue what has happened, they were both fine when i left for work this morning. We have got both out and into the hospital tank which was already set up, but it looks like the stress was too much for the bigger one and she has now gone, the little one is swimming around ok. This is on top of what happened the other day when I found one of the male Platy’s looking very worse for wear with half his tail missing, and I just thought he had been fighting now im not so sure.

It is a community 220 litre tank with the following fish:
1 x Common Sucker Loach
1 x Common Plec
1 x Red Tail Black Shark
1 x Pakistani Loach (Stripy).
5 x Adult Platy 3 babies
18 x Neon & Cardinal Tetra’s (not sure what ratio’s they don’t stay still long enough)
6 x Blue Tetra’s
3 x Corys

Has anybody got any ideas what is going on? :-(

Claire

Probably the rubu shark, they are very teritorial.
Try taking him out for a few days

We dont really have anywhere to put him, the hospital tank is only 5 UK gallons and it has the sick fish in it and my larger tank also has platy's in it and my small one has my Betta and im not willing to risk him.

Does anybody else agree with it probably being the RTBS, i wouldnt want to get rid of him if it turned out to be the Sucking Loach (ive heard they can attack fish's eyes)?

Never kept one of thoise catfish keep watching the tank and see who is the culprit :hey:

To be honest you have quite a few culprits in there, i would get more aggressive fish, as placid one's won't work in that tank.

Hi Wilder

Do you have any suggestions as to what sort of fish would work well? I can always take the other Platy's and put them in my large tank. Do you think any of the other breeds of fish are at risk?

Thanks in advance

Claire

I would get the tetra's and livebearers out, barbs are meant to be good as they are aggressive themselves.

Which of the fish in the tank do you count as agressive? Is is the RTBS and the Sucking Loach or are others in there aggressive as well?

Just trying to work out what to do fo the best, Chris is saying if it is them then he could always see if he could rehome them?

The loaches, plecs, and red tailed shark are aggressive, watch the corys they are not aggressive.

My guess would be the sucking loach. They are trouble especially if they have any size to them (over about 3").
