Betta NO, but closely related.

Any other questions?

I'm wondering what kind of tank mates I can get or if it's best to just have the 4 by themselves? I was thinking of getting some croaking "sparkling" gouramis?? Maybe a pair of licorice gouramis??

Is it ok to have 4 of the days paradise together? I'm pretty sure I've got 1 male and 3 females although there is a medium sized one that might be another male.

edit: Also so far they seem to be very shy/nervous fish...they are quite pale compared to when they were in the shop. Will they come around or is this their personality?? I sure hope not...

Arggg I want one!!! I would wait awhile until they establish territory and you can make sure you do have 1 male and 3 females and see how agressive they get.

Don't want them ruining any licorice gourami ;)

If they are anything like regular paradise fish I wouldn't recommend putting them with other labyrinth fish. But I'm not sure what their personality is like, they don't seem to be a very common fish so I don't know much about them.

Edit: horrible spelling

I read they are nothing like the other paradise fish. They are very peaceful fish. I did read however that during breeding time (if they do breed) that it's best to remove the female/females as the males get quite agressive towards them.

I'm not sure on the chances of them breeding though. Right now I don't think I'll add anymore fish to the tank...maybe some ghost shrimp or something but no other fish. I need to give these guys time to settle in and since there are 4 it's probably not a good idea to add anything else anyways. I'd love to get some sparkling gouramis sometime though probably not for this tank though

lordy I hope you're right about them being more peaceful than regular paradise fish ... I just got 5 and am now in the middle of total tank meltdown

Oh that's terrible :X I read normal paradise fish were really agressive.

Here's what I just read about the Days paradise fish (brown spike-tailed paradise fish):

"Quite frankly, this fish is perfect and I can’t figure out why more people haven’t tried it. The only real drawback to this fish is its name. Most people when they see the name Paradise Fish immediately think of a mid-sized, brutish fish that is not quite as pretty as a dwarf gourami, but much more likely to kill all of its tank-mates. This characterization is unfortunate because the common Paradise fish Macropodus opercularis is not the only Paradise fish. The Brown Spike-tailed Paradise Fish has little in its behavior that resembles Macropodus opercularis. In fact it is no longer included in the same genus as his more brutish cousin. "
