I while back I got a Male Betta for my mom in the Nursing Home. It worked out for awhile, until she tried standing to feed the fish and fell.

She is wheelchair bound at the moment, a bit of Dementia and forgets that she cannot walk.

To make sure she doesn't fall again, I brought the male Betta home.   The Male Betta has a 10 gallon, and my 20 gallon community tank includes -

7 neon Tetras
4 Cories
2 Black Skirt Tetras

AND 1 FEMALE BETA                    I gave my two Pleckos to the Nursing Home for their 55 gallon tank, as they were getting too big for my 20 gallon.

It is a very peaceful tank at the moment.... BUT, could I add a Male Betta to the tank?

Thank you for your opinions...      Also, Happy Labor Day!!!!

the black skirt tetras will most likely nip at him, he is fine in a 10 gallon, but if you really want him with the others i would rehome the black skirt tetras (or you can see how it goes if they are ripping him or not) and you'll need to up the female beta could to 5 or he'll kill her if she is alone.
also the tank should be heavily planted with not super fast moving water, and have some floating plants at the top and you should be good.
because you have fast moving fish, he should not be able to hurt them. i have mine in a 20 gallon right now and leaves all my other fish alone, but some beta are aggressive and with try to kill the other fish, but just see how it goes.

sorry you cant keep him with a female thats a cardinal sin there.

I have my Male Betta in a community tank with 4 neon's, 4 male ended guppy's, 1 cloud minnow and 2 peppered corydora's and its doing just fine, keeps himself to himself and likes to explore :)

cloud minnows is a school fish and should have a min of 3 in a group, but 6+ is always better
also with the peppered corydora... they are a school fish and a min of 3, but 6+ is better.

Problem is: I have a female Betta in the tank.   All the fish are peaceful and get along fine, I certainly don't want any of them stressing out and of course NO fighting...

How do they breed Bettas if a Male and Female fight?  Just curious.   Never mind... Just read info. in the link.

I think I'll leave good enough alone.  I'd feel horrible if he killed one of my other fish.  I do have a set up similar as you described, but I'll keep him in the 10 gallon.  He just looks so lonely..

A male and a female Betta can not live peacefully in the same tank. They will fight unless you put a divider in the tank!

Here is some really good info: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/423364-betta-splendens-caresheet/
Thank you for the link!  I do like the 5 Gallon Acrylic tank that is pictured.  I'll have to look into purchasing one of those.

Glad you found the link helpful, I too think it is an excellent piece!

Your male Betta will be fine alone in the 10 gallon. You could focus on making his environment more interesting with driftwood, stones and plants.
In my tanks I now and then I re-arrange the look of them to keep things more interesting for my fish, do you do that too?

Some Bettas will be fine with a snail if you like those. My first Betta did not like any tankmates, not even the unassuming Nerite snail I tried him with. He harassed the poor creature and would not let up, so I had to put her in my other tank, lol!

My second Betta was great in a community tank, but I think I overfed him in there, wanting to make sure everyone had enough. I believe this caused constipation and he developed dropsy! I swore myself to always keep Bettas solitary from then on!

Thank you, I do know this, the cloud minnow was with others in another tank but they had died, so I transferred it into the one that I have, its schooled up with the neons and seem to be doing fine, however I was planning on getting some more on the weekend and a couple more corydora's, I've been stocking up slowly.
