What stunning fish they are! Just found this thread on my phone whilst at work so please forgive me if its a really stupid question as I have not had much time to research so thought I would ask away. I currently have a rena aqaulife 300 with 6 redline torpedo barbs (2 inch at the minute) 3 black spot barbs, 3 albino cories, 1 rainbow shark, 1 bull nose plec, 6 cardinals and 4 apistos. At the moment I am treating for whitespot which has already claimed 6 cardinals with another 3 looking dodgy, all other fish cleared up but cardinals I don't think will make it. Anyway once this has well and truley cleared up could I keep a sev or 2 in this tank? I would plan to get small as poss to give the cardinals time to grow or die off as they are a couple of years old anyway. The tank has quite a few hiding places and its peacefull enough at the minute. Really fancy getting a colourfull large fish (or 2) as a sort of centre piece if you like. Any advice is greatly appreciated, hope the question is not too silly. Forgot too add that the tank is filtered with a rena xp2 and a jbl 1500 so its well filtered and at least one 40% water change a week, thanks

Yes i dont see why not,I personally think you could keep 2 in there...its down to you really.

BUT

The cardinals have to go,or they will be lunch and the white spot definitely has to go.

I'm not sure about the Apistos...The Sevs would leave them alone but the Apistos may suffer (confidence, hiding, not eating).

How big is the tank, rena 300 Im guess its 300 Litres? Making it approx 79 usg. If so, yes, But I would say 1 only, there are other thought son the minimum size tank for a Sev, 75g being my opinion for one.

You cant add one until the tank is fully cycled though and disease free, you will need to research tankmates thoroughly, you could well lose the cardinals once the sev is full grown, or if you have a well fed, placid sev he may not bother them.

seconded what minxy says. need to know tank dimensions before reccomending anything. and as minx says the cardinals will most probably end up on the menu once the sev is big enough. ( which doesnt take long)

the other fish should be ok. but as others have said i wouldnt be thinking about adding anything at all untill the ich has been cleared up and tank been running for a while without frther outbreaks.

Thanks for the replies, the tank is 300litres 1200 long, 300 deep and 700 high. Before the ich it was all ok with ammo and nitrite at 0 and nitrate between 20 & 40 as that's what it leaves the tap at. The cardinals will go provided I can convince the wife that sevs are the way to go but won't be getting any fish until the ich has gone and everything is back to normal. Other than the cardinals though you think the other tank mates would be ok? Where else can I research suitable tankmates? While I am waiting for the ich to clear up I may as well get as much info on them as possible before I convince the wife it was her idea to get them all along!!!

You may need to rehome the apistos, other than that, the redline, black barbs are fine, as is the shark, plec and corydoras (although you could do with 3 more, they like larger groups). The tank would then be pretty much stocked with the severum, which get from small so it grows with the other inhabitants and you shouldnt have any problems :good:

I would say 2 for a 300ltr tank although many people would probably disagree. I have a Gold Sev in my 180ltr along with a Parrot and theres plenty of room for them. I would say get 2 of the same kind though cos I had a green and gold at 1 point and the green didnt let the gold out of the corner.

cheers for the replies, I may have to have a rethink as I dont really want to have to take back the apisto's but at the same time I dont want to cause stress to them by getting a bigger cichlid in there. Shame, they really are stunning fish. Back to the drawing board i suppose.
