Can I Add A Turtle To My Tank?

I have a 40 gallon (151 liters) tropical aquarium with 25 fish in it (platys, tetras, loaches). I was wondering if I could add some kind of aquatic turtle to the mix.

I know they are hard to care for and require something to sit on in order to bask, but is there any kind of small sized turtle that would work in my tank?

You can, although you would need to make sure that there is a basking area and that there is nothing in the tank that he could possible get trapped under as they do drown!!
Having said that personally i wouldn't recommend it, the turtle will most likely eat your fish. not to mention they are VERY messy and you would most likely need to upgrade your filtration etc..

personally i wouldnt put a turtle in with my fish but its not because there hard to care for its because there full of desease's like salmonella and various other things
best kept on there own really but thats just my opinion

Valid points. I appreciate the replies. After further research, I will NOT be getting a turtle. Maybe in the future and in a separate tank.

What is the smallest aquatic turtle out there though? I know a lot oft hem get quite large, but are there any that don't?

Musk turtles are the smallest species getting to 4", two would be fine in a 125L for life provided there is adequate filtration, (i.e.a decent sized external/cannister)
