Can A Heater Ever Be Too Big?

rena smartheater all the way, i would never use anything else, they are a bit bulky but have never had one break and i've got a cupboard full of empty rena boxes so they are well trialed  you can see one in my sig between the cabomba and the java moss.

The Elites were fairly reliable for me

As covered above, the heater will fail sooner if oversized. The Electroic ones use a relay to switch the heat on and off, and they should fail off. Old By-metallic switch types will fail on, as they have a magnet on the "on" contact, but not of the "off" one. This is so that the strip does not bounce off the on contact when the heater turns on. This occurs due to the sudden current load setting up opposing magnetic fields in the contact and switch, forcing them apart. The magnet is use to remove the magnetic force pushing the strip away from the contact at switch on time :good:

If it were me, I'd down-grade the heater before adding livestock

All the best
