Hmm...
If i had to guess - yep, I'd say it is a "him"... but I can't really see under his belly - if there's a white spot sticking out the underside of his belly, it's a "her"... but looking at the belly and ventrals I *think* it's a him.

Can you see underneath?

I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering how you can tell that definitely.
I just wanna know what to look for

Well...you have to realize I've been staring at Betta fry for weeks, trying to discern the slightest difference that would lead me to be able to sex them accurately. Turns out, I've been right every time so far.

Males tend to be longer through the body, and male Plakats especially tend to have a certain curve to their head that I haven't seen in ANY female. Also, the lack of the ovipositor or any white dot at the belly, and the sharp point of the anal fin all point to male.

cool - when we first got him he was quite small and the shop was selling them as females.

he has the egg thing (white dot - ovipositor) but as he's grown its now gone.

Some good news too - He is a lot more active

he is swimming about now and looks a lot happier

He's interested in his refeection again (not flaring but looking)
and he's currently following a bit a flake food round the surface

Many young males have a small white dot where the ovipositor would be located, but it usually does disappear as they grow older.

I'm glad he's doing better today.

hiya,

one of my females looks more like a male plakat too. so have had it seperated from other female to be safe. have put it in one of those mesh nursing thing on the side of my tank.
how are we supposed to find out for certain what it is?

Thanks for the tips folks - he is loads better today - the swelling has gone down and he is swimming about a lot more

he colours up and flares at his reflection again too

things are looking up
