males have loads of bristles
females have none/very few.

They sexually mature at 3". There max size is 5-6"
My male is not even 3" and has alot of bristles and is on his 4th spawn.

oops.. i read as how big do they get and how can you tell if male or female...

we can normally tell by the time they are 1.5" to 2"
