Bright Green Algae?

recently ive noticed a huge bloom of really bright green algae thats pretty much all over everything except the tank walls
it pretty much turned the top layer of my sand green which i sucked up with a gravel vac and threw away
but its still over some of the decorations. anyone know of a good way to remove this stuff?

i put in some aigae remover but my fish seem to hate it and i think they may be sick because of it now

the other 2 platies and 1 otto are fine or as it seems

Ok, stop adding the algae remover stuff as it will just make your fish sick and can also kill any live plants. There are many different ways to get rid of algae, and many different reason it can show up. If I may ask, is your tank planted? What is your wpg? Do you add any fertilizers to your tank? How long do you keep your lights on a day? And can you give us the reading for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? These would all help alot in knowing what specifically is causing this algae to show up.

i dont have any live plants in the tank,
ammonia and nitrites are at 0
i dont have a nitrate test kit yet

my parents left the light on for 2 days straight
and i havent added any algae remover since that first time and it was only half the dosage directed on the bottle

i have a 8watt T5 bulb on a 10gallon tank so a little less than 1WPG, but the sand does reflect a lot of the light since its playsand

My suggestion would be to get a timer for your lights, and keep them on for maybe 10-12 hours a day. You should see an improvement in algae control. And if not, then you can blame your parents for leaving the lights on for 2 days.

Have a look at the pinned article about algae in the planted tank forum on this site. It sounds like blue green algae, if its soft, slimly, has a distinctive smell and comes away easily from surfaces it is probably BGA. You will find in the planted pinned articles; some suggestions on getting rid of it in the article by George Farmer (BGA) Cyanobacteria.

ive been thinking about the timer thing and will go pick one up tomorrow

its might be BGA, its a really bright green color and really slimy, but i havent noticed any smell yet
