Hi all,

I just wanted some peoples input on how they track spawning. I am planning on creating a database that will allow me to track each spawn and each selected breeding pair.

First, I would like to understand the coloration and finnage naming conventions people use. for example:

I know that OHM means Over Half Moon, CT = crown tail so on and so forth. What I am not sure of is the correct naming convention for coloration and eyes. What I would like is to know how a betta is correctly listed to track. Do they try to list rays?

Would it be correct to list a Mustard Gas Half Moon as MGHM? Or, would it be more correct to list it genetically, assuming that is possible. Something like Rl for red loss.... If someone has a correct method for listing i would be very greatful.

So, on with the idea..

The sheet would track each individual keeper beta as to it's coloration and finnage, it's birth date, and known traits it carries but does not display.

The breeding sheet would then track which individuals spawned together and the conditions that were present ie water parameters, time together, spawn length.. and so on.

the spawns page would then track the results of each spawn, the number of fry, the survival rate, the coloration and finnage percentages, the number of keepers, and so on.

This will allow me to accurately keep records for all the generations of fish I have and allow me to accurately label my fish in future generations for characteristics inherited. I think this would greatly help in anticipating the outcome of future spawns.

If someone has any information as to what a good way to go about this is I would appreciate it. I would also appreciate any help I can get with specifics to track that I may forget or have not thought of.

Thanks,

BTW if this works out well enough i will probably make an HTML doc that would allow anyone to begin tracking this information on a shared site.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Well, everybody can call the terms differently, but I would go by what IBC uses. They have a betta identification document that has the information your wanting and will give you atleast an idea of one way they kept records of fish genetics. There is also a spawn log diary document that has good information to go by. You can download them from the downloads link on the home page.

I think it would be an important document to breeders interested in tracking and learning more about betta genetics.

I would think it would be important to list how many rays your fish ended up with, because the branching of the rays is an important factor in making HM fish. Crowntails I would also count how many rays they show to classify them as SR-Singleray; DR-Doubleray; DDR-Double double ray, etc. Look at BettySplendens website and there is alot of descriptors there for coloring, finnage, and abbreviations.

I can find nothing on the downloads page that mentions the correct genetic naming conventions nor can i find a breeding diary. Maybe the downloads page changes for members because my page is fairly dull.

O, I'm sorry. It is on the Better Bettas website, the yahoo forum for IBC members. Do you have your membership approved there yet? If not, I can email you the docs to look at. Here is the link for them:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BetterBettas...ecord%20Sheets/

They have downloads for standards at the IBC homepage. The other link I was referring too is:
http://www.bettysplendens.com/articles/home.asp

Good articles and stock on her website, and she is currently one of the top breeders in the states.

Thank you, I will have to go over these in the next few hours.. I will try to post a copy of a simple html form so you all have an idea of what i am talking about.

This is a generic example of what the form would be like. The on submit button would then create a text page that you could print for your records. there would also be an option to save this to a database that would then track your betta and it's spawns. That would be another sheet altogether but I hope you get the idea. Once your fish is in the database all you would have to do is open the spawn tracking sheet and grab the fish from the database, it would then give you your odds for certain traits and would allow you to then track the fry in the future with this as their parent and would then allow for a genetic record to be created and spun down the generations.

This would also help for selling your betta. you could show lineage that the buyer could then track with his/her future spawns from your sold fish. Just imagine the possibilities for tracking new traits. we could be linked as a whole rather than in small groups.
