I think I may try this anyway, but I just wanted to get some advice. If I put my German blue rams in my ten gallon by themselves will they still spawn? The do it constantly in my 38 community, but I would like to see if I couldn't raise the fry for a profit. Any input would be helpful, plus any advice on raising ram fry. Thanks.

Hi,

Yes the rams should still spawn, just feed em good quality food provide them with a bit of plant cover and leave it to them. They will also look after the fry themselves eventually, but might mess up a couple of times before they look after them right, IMO.

Cheers

hmmm, the male might kill the female because there is little space. read the pinned topic on what i wrote....if it helps. but i bet you will have more succes in a 20 gal

hmmm, I got 10 breeding tanks all at about 10 gallons with 5 of them containig pairs of rams and havent got a dead female yet. I also know another guy who breeds dwarfs and his pairs get along fine in his tanks too. Just thought I'd give my opinion as in both of these cases there have been no problems. You could also place a trio of cardinals in there to act as both dither fish and focal point for your rams, until they spawn that is, and then remove them.

Hi,

Newly hatched brine shrimp.

What I do is start a batch of when the fry are about 3 days old, then the brine shrimp hatch out on day 5 to coincide with the fry at the free swimming stage.

I'll post pictures of my rams in a 10 gallon tank with their babies if you want.

Hi Apisto
Can you post some pictures of your frys.
I did have mine spawn once, but the BBS are too big for them to swallow. Only few survive.

I would also like to see, I think I have a pair of bolivians but not 100% sure yet.

I would love to see a pic. Right now the rams are still in my 38 Gallon because they had already laid the eggs before I could get everything ready.

I picked up some liquid fry food for the first couple of days when they become free swimming. I have read a couple of people say they BBS are to large for the really young fry. I am still unsure if I will leave the fry in the 38 or move them to the 10 once they get a little larger. That way the mother and father can try again sooner.

Another question I have is my LFS has offered me $2.00 a fish once they are about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Does this sound right? They are selling the ones they have at 5.00 a fish now.

If I get enough fry out of this batch I will probably go ahead and purchase a 20G for the sole purpose of breeding. We'll see though.

I would say thats a decent price, my lps sells them for $12.98 and bolivians for $9.98. If I get my pair to spawn I could make at least $3-4 for each fry that survives.

Do you have any pictures of your rams and the fry?

just an update, the eggs started to hatch tonight, got some wigglers going on. I'll try and get a pic and post it this weekend.

Hi All,

mine spawn in a ten all the time, but i haven't got a succesfull batch so far...they layed the day before yesterday so i should have lilttle guys tomorrow morning or in the evening...somwhere between most likely..but yeah...should be good i think

for some reason not many of the eggs hatched. I had a couple hatch but after another day only like 5 or 6 wigglers. Mom decided to eat the eggs and try again. Oh well, they'll probably be moved to the 10 Gallon soon.

10 gallon seems fine, I know other people that do it in that size tank.
