Last night my husband decided to see if the 2 bronze corys we have would eat a little prawn (they'd had some bloodworms earlier on), they've been fed on flake food all their life until I bought them(2 weeks ago). They'd also been kept in a huge tank with a 6 inch geo and a blue gourami and they were so miserable as the geo was a bully, we got a 15g tank just for them and they've been so happy in it!

Anyway back to what I was saying, he put the prawn in about 9pm last night and when we were going to bed I noticed they were going mad, chasing each other around and entwining, almost dancing LOL over the airstone. They were also swimming all over the tank(not just at the bottom / middle), dodging through the plants and at one point it almost looked like they were sussing the plants out.

They seem to be back to normal this morning, so I just wondered if this sounds like they are gonna produce some eggs, or if the prawn upset them or something?

Also is 2 of them alone ok? I think they've lived like this most of their lives(not sure how long the previous owners had them for) and they seem happy enough, just don't want them to be upset if I put more in, but at the same time if they would be happier with more of their kind then I'll get more.

Thanks.

Sounds like the Cory dance. Could be the happy dance or the sexy dance. Is one larger and fatter than the other? You need a male and a female to have viable eggs.

One is definately larger, not sure about fatter, can't really tell, I think they might be breeding, I've read a bit more about them and they have been doing the "T" position a couple of times but no eggs. Their previous owner said they woke up one morning to loads of eggs in the tank but wasn't sure if it was the cory, the geo or the gourami so maybe it was them. They are certainly happier then they used to be, previous owner kept them in a tank with a 6 inch geo who was a bully and a gourami, since being moved to a tank alone they've been so active and happy. They look happier and healthier than before, in the old tank they looked so scared, poor things! Were going to do a partial water change and put some cold water in to see if that gives them the extra boost.

Most likely they will spawn for you. Bronze C. Aeneus is one of the easiest cories to spawn. And if the previous owner said they saw eggs all over the glass, then it was most likely them. Are these the only fish you are keeping in the tank? If you want to make them really happy, then get some more. They like to be in groups, and I like to keep mine in groups of 6 or more if possible.

They are on their own at the mo, just need to convince husband that they would be happier in a larger group but he doesn't think they would be(despite my nagging him about it LOL). How many would be ok in a 50litre tank? Would it be best to have more of the same or would they be just as happy with say 2 pandas and 2 bandits?

Your tank might do with 5 C.aeneus, but I would add them slowly. It is small. 5 is pushing it. Get little guys and let them grow up in the tank--or let them give you babies. haha.

Cory females will lay eggs w/o a male, but they will not hatch. So you need a male and a female. duh--haha
